High School Students Discuss Diversity

About 150 high school students from around the Panhandle gathered at North Idaho College on Tuesday for a diversity seminar.

Students listened to speakers from Seattle’s Anti-Defamation League, Spokane’s Medicine Wheel Academy and The Spokesman-Review. Participants then split up into groups to discuss diversity and tolerance.

“We cannot change our past,” said Larry Nicholas, one of the seminar’s speakers. “We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way … The only thing we can do is play on the strength we have and that is our attitude.”

Students came from schools in Bonners Ferry, Coeur d’Alene, Lakeland, Post Falls, Plummer-Worley, Priest River, St. Maries and Spokane.

The students were asked to write essays about the experience. Those essays will be published in The Spokesman-Review.
