Take Pride In Idaho Awards Distributed

Several local individuals and organizations were recently presented with 1999 Take Pride in Idaho Awards by Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.

The awards are given annually for group and individual efforts to promote and preserve Idaho tourism and recreational resources.

Recipients and their awards are:

Author Carlos Schwantes, a Moscow resident and University of Idaho history professor, received the Take Pride in Idaho Media Award for promoting Idaho and communicating its many attributes through personal observations and photos in his book, “So Incredibly Idaho.”

The U.S. Forest Service and the Taft Tunnel Preservation Society received the Take Pride in Idaho Historic Preservation Award for their successful efforts in preserving North Idaho’s railroad history with the creation of the Hiawatha Rail Trail. The trail follows the railroad route which linked Chicago to Seattle and was the nation’s last transcontinental railroad project, with the final spike being home in 1909.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held annually at the University of Idaho was honored with the Take Pride in Idaho Cultural Tourism Award.

The 1999 festival, which attracted more than 30,000 people, was recognized for showcasing Idaho’s cultural tourism offerings.

Area Region 1 schools have received the 1999 A+ Excellence in Education Award from the Idaho Education Association.

The award was established by the IEA several years ago to recognize Idaho public schools and school districts that use innovative and creative strategies to move ahead in education reform. Region 1 consists of 12 districts and includes schools in Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties.

School honorees are listed by county.

Washington Elementary School and Sandpoint Middle School in Bonner County.

Boundary County School District 101 in Boundary County.

Winton Elementary, Hayden Lake Elementary, Borah Elementary, Fernan Elementary, Ramsey Elementary, Ponderosa Elementary and Post Falls Middle School, all in Kootenai County.

Army Staff Sgt. Eric A. Delegard, a 1983 Lakeland High School graduate, has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal.

Delegard, a training supervisor assigned to the 2nd Military Police Company, Camp Casey, South Korea, was honored for demonstrating outstanding achievement or meritorious service in performing his duties on behalf of the Army.
