Local youngsters are getting geared up for VeggieTown Values. Ritzville’s nine local churches are banding together to put on a special summer Bible school based on the popular Christian cartoon characters from Veggie Tales. FERRY COUNTY
Curlew
The public is invited to the town’s annual Barrel Derby Day on June 6. The event features a pancake feed, fun run, health fair, hoop shoot, river barrel race and parade. For those having too much fun at those events, there’s also a stretcher race in the afternoon. Food, games and bingo are also part of the day. Festivities begin at 6:30 a.m. and run through dusk.

Moses Lake
Golfers, mark your calendar for July 15. That’s the expected date for Moses Pointe Golf Resort’s opening.
The course has been called unique and challenging. “It’s a very solid course. I don’t think there’s another one quite like it in Central Washington,” says owner Mike Moore. The 18-hole course features a clubhouse and time-share condos. Canoes and personal watercraft will be available for rent shortly after the opening.

Odessa
The people of Odessa are proud of their local hospital. To prove it, they parted with more than $18,000 at a recent charity auction. The Odessa Healthcare Foundation’s eighth-annual wine-tasting and microbrew-sampling event drew a crowd of 150 residents. They purchased goods and services from local businesses, plus a variety of hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind items.

Newport
Pioneer Park Campground off LeClerc Road north of town is open for the season. Campers pay $8 a night. Gates open at 6 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. South Skookum and Browns Lakes campgrounds are closed due to snowpack, but may be open Memorial Day weekend.

Corbin Art Center is again offering its Corbin Kids Summer Workshop of drawing, painting, crafts and other fun things, starting June 14. The program is open for children in two groups, ages 3-5 and 6-11. For a class schedule and information, call the center at 625-6677.

Colville
The Colville School Board has big shoes to fill with the resignation of longtime board member Carol Villers. Villers, an 11-year board veteran, was chosen from six candidates in three counties as Panorama Educator of the Year. Her decision to leave comes after accepting a new position as acting director for Northeast Washington Tri-County Health.
WHITMAN COUNTY
Pullman
In the $2 billion capital budget signed by Gov. Gary Locke last week, Washington State University received funding for several new buildings.
Included in the budget is approximately $72 million in construction dollars for Pullman and $65 million for the branch campuses. In Pullman, $28.9 million was budgeted for a teaching and learning center above the parking structure across from the Compton Union Building, $5 million for renovation of White Hall as an honors residence, and more than $23 million for additions, repairs and preservation of other buildings on the Pullman campus.

St. Maries
St. Maries postal employees and contract carriers collected more than 2,600 pounds of food May 8 for the St. Maries Food Bank. The food was collected in conjunction with the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Postal customers throughout Idaho gave 430,000 pounds of food.

KOOTENAI COUNTY
Coeur d’Alene
Lakes Highway District will begin a reconstruction project for 21/2 miles of Clagstone Road and two miles of Remington Road on June 1. Remington Road will be reconstructed from Weir Road to Clagstone. Clagstone will be reconstructed form the end of the existing pavement at Seasons Road to a half-mile north of Highway 54. Reconstruction is expected to take 12 weeks. The project will result in a widened, paved road.
Construction delays can be expected and alternate routes are encouraged.
LATAH COUNTY
Moscow
Two University of Idaho students have been named recipients of grants from the Fulbright graduate student awards program. The awards will allow Joan Kluwe, a UI graduate student in resource recreation and tourism, to study at the Finnish Forest Research Institute in Rovaniemi, Finland. David Fuhrman, a UI civil engineering major, will study at the International Institute for Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering in Delft, the Netherlands.

Silverton
Due to heavy snow accumulations and cool spring weather, several forest roads on the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District may not be passable. Coeur d’Alene River Road is open to Magee Camp. Side roads off the Coeur d’Alene River may be blocked with snow. The Little North Fork can be driven for approximately 10 miles from the Coeur d’Alene River bridge to Breakwater Creek. Road 412 on Shoshone Creek can be driven for 11 miles from Coeur d’Alene River Road to Berlin Flats Campground. For information, call the Forest Service office in Silverton at (208) 752-1221.

LINCOLN COUNTY
Libby
Libby Public Schools Superintendent Kirby Maki is leading an investigation into the April 26 arrest of administrator George “Doc” Sargent. The sevenmember school board will decide what to do. Maki said they could decide to terminate him, change his duties or do nothing. Sargent will make his initial court appearance in Steamboat Springs, Colo., on June 29. He is charged with drunken driving, carrying concealed handguns and possessing marijuana. Sargent is on paid leave from his job.
