North Idaho’s small-school athletes stood out Saturday in the state track and field championships.

In the A-3 meet, the Wallace boys 400-meter relay team, led by Zach Penney, captured gold in a time of 44.99 seconds at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium.

Penney captured two individual medals, placing second in the 400 (52.53) and third in the 200 (23.24).

Wallace’s Craig Zanetti cap tured third in the long jump (20 feet, 8 inches) and took fifth in the 100 (11.7).

Gian Ghigleri of Wallace took third in the 110 hurdles (16.45).

In the A-4 meet, Ben Danforth of Falls Christian Academy took second in the 200 (23.67) and third in the 100 (11.68).

Ryan Hefy of Clark Fork finished sixth in the 1,600 (4:57.38). Kootenai freshman Tana Dooney took fifth in the 800 (2:29.13), and the Kootenai girls 800 relay (1:55.33) and 1,600 relay (4:27.91) each placed fifth.

Kootenai’s boys were fifth in the 1,600 relay (3:45.81).

Firth’s boys and Nampa Christian’s girls took A-3 team titles while Raft River’s girls and boys defended their A-4 championships.
