Gas Prices Still Lofty

As the holiday weekend approaches, the Inland Automobile Association says the price of unleaded self-serve gasoline at local pumps is 16 cents a gallon higher than two months ago.

The price boost here mirrors a national trend of dramatic increases after gas prices had dipped below $1 per unleaded gallon in February in many areas and at some Spokane stations.

For Memorial Day weekend - which marks the start of the summer driving season - the IAA reports average unleaded gas prices in the area are $1.29 a gallon for self serve, compared with $1.13 a gallon Easter weekend. Last year at this time, unleaded gas was $1.15 a gallon. In Washington, the statewide average is now $1.40; Idaho is $1.28.

Drivers using premium-unleaded fuel can expect to pay about $1.50 a gallon this weekend at self-serve pumps; or 18 cents more than two months ago.

Nationally, the average price of self-serve unleaded gas is $1.16 a gallon. Georgia has the lowest average - 98 cents a gallon.
