Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest issuer of student loans, announced it is buying Nellie Mae Corp., a New England student loan maker, for $320 million in cash.

Odwalla Inc. is suing the New Hampshire Insurance Co., claiming it offered just $250,000 to settle $21.2 million in claims related to the 1996 E. coli outbreak at the juicemaker. Odwalla says it lost millions of dollars after the outbreak, which forced it to shut down production at its Dinuba plant and order a massive recall. The contaminated juice led to the death of one person and sickened at least 66 others.

The Federal Aviation Administration wants the autopilot system in the Boeing MD-11 jetliner modified to prevent severe reactions when pilots try to make flight course changes while the system is engaged. The FAA said overreactions caused severe pitching during two incidents in 1996 and 1997, seriously injuring four passengers and a flight attendant.
