Spring Fiddle Contest Winners Announced

Several area residents recently competed in the 31st Annual Northwest Regional Fiddle Contest held this spring in Spokane. A total of 106 fiddlers competed in seven different age groups. First-place winners in each age group receive certification to the National Old Time Fiddle Contest scheduled for this summer in Weiser, Idaho.

Winners are listed by divisions.

Junior Division: Kimber Ludiker and Dennis Ludiker, both of Spokane, second and third-place winners, respectively; Joe Howard, Potlatch, Idaho, fourth place; and Tyson Jones, Newman Lake, fifth.

Young Adult: Kelly Schuh, Spokane, fourth place.

Senior: Marge McFaul, Spokane, first place; Arkie Langston, Spokane, fourth place.

Championship: Spokane residents Tony Ludiker, second place, and Keith Neihenke, fourth place.

The Accompanist Award went to Rod Anderson, Spokane, who was on stage 80 times.

Daniel Meyers, a senior at Whitman College, has received a Thomas J. Watson postgraduate fellowship for the 1999-2000 academic year. He will receive a $22,000 grant to travel to Ireland while engaging in a yearlong independent study project on the country’s traditional music.

Meyers, an English/music major, has performed with the Whitman Renaissance Consort and the Testostertones, a men’s a cappella group he co-founded. He has written music for Whitman’s Harper Joy Theatre, directed the musical scores for “The Man of Mode,” and worked as a musician at last summer’s Utah Shakespearean Festival.

He is the son of Roger and Linda Meyer, Spokane, and is a 1995 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Air Force Airman Daniel Durtschi has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is the son of Jay and Delina Durtschi, Veradale, and is a 1996 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Darah Poffenroth has been awarded a $3,000 Washington State University College of Agriculture and Home Economics Dean’s Merit Scholarship.

Poffenroth is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Healthy Foods and Choices Too, National Honor Society and Students Against Drunk Driving. She is a track and gymnastics participant and was a finalist in impromptu speaking for FBLA. She plans to study animal sciences at WSU.

She is the daughter of Debra and Dale Poffenroth, Greenacres, and is a senior at Central Valley High School.
