Book Club
Name: Flexus (formerly “Splinter Group”)
City: Spokane
Group history: Formed in mid-1998 by four women adjusting to the breakup of their long-term romantic relationships. A sub-group of a larger book club that has been meeting for 18 years, the group meets weekly, alternating between members’ homes and public venues. The point is “to discuss and laugh over what it’s like to be single again, and to support each other through the myriad of changes that breakups engender.”
Book reviewed: “Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends” (Impact Publishers, 324 pages, $12.95 paper) by Dr. Bruce Fisher.
Group representative: Kathy Hill.
The review: “This book,” according to Hill, “explains, step-by-step, 20 psychological stages people go through to position themselves to enjoy life after divorce. It’s an excellent overview to help guide people through their adjustments and prepare them for the opportunities opened by such a shake-up. The book is divided into two parts, the first addressing natural reactions such as anger and guilt, and the second exploring how to build a healthy, happy future. Although overly simplistic in a couple of places, the author deftly covers complex territory with compassion and optimism. The group laughed a lot over denying being in denial, the first step, and we revisit other steps such as letting go, trust and purpose, as needed.”
