Ncaa Sues Msu Player

The NCAA is suing former Montana State basketball player Stephanie Van Troba for legal fees over an eligibility claim she won, because she did not exhaust the appeals process with the NCAA before taking her case to court.

But none of that really matters now, because Van Troba’s doctor says she can no longer play because of continuing pain in her shins.

Van Troba signed with Montana State out of Palmer, Alaska, in 1997. But she soon learned that one of her high school courses did not meet the NCAA’s academic requirements.

The NCAA ruled that she would have to sit out her freshman year and lose a year of scholarship funding.

Van Troba appealed the NCAA staff decision, but was denied. She could have appealed to another NCAA committee, but with her scholarship money frozen and fearing she would have to drop out of school, she filed a lawsuit. The judge sided with her and the money was released.
