Vaughn Chappell Spokane
Graveside service for Vaughn F. Chappell, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Chappell died Thursday.
He attended Grant Elementary and Lewis and Clark High schools.
Mr. Chappell served as a staff sergeant with the Army Military Police, 94th Infantry, in the European Theater during World War II.
After the war he managed a 10-cent drugstore and Durham’s Restaurant in Spokane for many years.
He was a member of the Christian Science Church, American Legion Post No. 9 and the 2nd Marine Division Association.
Survivors include five nephews, David and Douglas Peterson, both of Mead, Donald Chappell Jr., of Maine, and George and Max Chappell, Jr., both of Spokane; and one sister-in-law, Mary Chappell of Wisconsin.
Lucille Thomas Spokane
No service will be held for Lucille M. Thomas, 91, at her request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Thomas, who died Tuesday, was born in Roseburg, Ore.
She graduated from the University of Oregon and did graduate work at the Central School of Art and Design in London, Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy, New York University, Columbia University and the New York School of Interior Design.
Mrs. Thomas was an interior designer in private practice in Spokane for many years.
She was a member of the Spokane County Bar Auxiliary, Women of Rotary, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Board of Policy of Liberty Lobby, the Animal Protection Institute, Sierra Club, Rockwood Garden Club and the National Association of the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
Her husband, Spokane attorney John Thomas, died in 1991.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Leta Naimy and Mabel Sackett, both of Spokane; one brother-in-law, Ralph Thomas of Walla Walla; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the John H. Thomas Scholarship Fund at Whitman College in Walla Walla in care of any Washington Trust Bank branch.
Dawn Hetnar Otis Orchards.
No service will be held for for Dawn M. Hetnar, 54. An open house is planned from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at 4916 N. Karen in Otis Orchards. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements A 21-year Spokane area resident, Mrs. Hetnar died Wednesday. She was born in Los Angeles.
She was a homemaker and a member of the American Kennel Club.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; three sons, Robbie Hetnar, and Bill and Michael Fitch, all of Spokane; a daughter, Kelli Kleweno of Spokane; her parents, Harold and Alyce Holtz of Spokane; a brother, Michael Holtz of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and five grandchildren.
Curtis Sturgill Spokane
Visitation for Curtis Sturgill, a 48-year Spokane resident, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.
Born in Hope, Idaho, Mr. Sturgill died May 25. He was 75.
He was blinded while serving with the Marine Corps during World War II.
Mr. Sturgill was a member of the Blind Veterans Association and the Elks and Eagles lodges.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sybil; a son, Barry Sturgill of Seattle; a daughter, Janice Sturgill of Spokane; and a brother, Roy Sturgill of Lowell, Ore.

Donald Manor Colville, Wash.
Memorial service for Donald O. Manor, 56, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colville. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville is in charge of arrangements.
Born and raised in Spokane, Mr. Manor died Thursday.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1961 and attended Eastern Washington University for one year.
While living in Cheney, he worked in the parts department at a Chevrolet car dealership.
In 1964 he married Rita Sprute.
They lived in California for a short time before returning to Spokane.
Mr. Manor later moved to Mullan, Idaho, where he began working for Hecla Mines.
He lived in Wallace for 18 years before moving to Republic, Wash., continuing to work in the mines.
In 1994 he took early retirement. He moved to Colville In 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Ritz; two daughters, Julie Lane of Colville and Mindee Mortensen of Centralia, Wash.; three sisters, Patricia and Janet Manor, both of Spokane, and Judy Gero of Ione, Wash.; a brother, Art Manor of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
Dorothy Martin-Mickens Newport, Wash.
Memorial service for Dorothy Martin-Mickens, a longtime Newport area resident, was Saturday at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Newport. Inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson, Mont. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Martin-Mickens, who was born in Compton, Calif., died Monday. she was 75.
She graduated from high school in California and attended one year of business college.
Mrs. Martin-Mickens was an active member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Her first husband, Grant Martin, died in World War II. Her second husband, Carleton Mickens, died in 1956.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Mickens of Scottsdale, Ariz., Carleton Mickens Jr., of Orlando, Fla., and John Mickens of Citrus Heights, Calif.; a daughter, Diane King of Newport; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
