* Boredom beater. The Spokane Youth Volunteer Corps is launching its second summer volunteer program, which will run June 23-Aug. 13.

The program is open to students ages 11-18 who will work on any of nine volunteer projects scheduled. There are openings for one weekend, two weeks, four weeks or the entire summer.

Among the projects are cleaning up the river bank, building a home for Habitat for Humanity, working at the Spokane Food Bank, working with animals at SpokAnimal C.A.R.E., tutoring kids, working with senior residents and more.

* Win, win, win. Last week, Pathways held its annual Pacesetter Awards, honoring high school students who demonstrate strong job leadership and teamwork skills.

Students interested in entering the Pathways Pacesetter for next year should contact their local high school counselor or marketing/DECA advisor.

To be eligible, each student must submit a portfolio that includes a resume, list of job skills, evidence of community involvement and career-related experiece, and letters of recommendation from a school adviser and employer.

Students are awarded a certificate of achievement, a $50 savings bonds, a letterman’s jacket pin and a T-shirt.
