Angels Settle On Stoneman

The Anaheim Angels said Sunday they have selected Montreal Expos executive Bill Stoneman as their new general manager.

Angels spokesman Tim Mead said a news conference was scheduled for today to introduce Stoneman. He gave no other details.

Bill Bavasi resigned as Angels general manager Oct. 1, after nearly six years in the position. Two days later, the team finished a disappointing 70-92 season and in last place in the A.L. West.

The Angels anticipated having a general manager in place before the World Series. Baseball mandates that no major announcements be made during the World Series so as not to detract from the sport’s biggest event.

Baylor reports confirmed

The Chicago Cubs finally won at something, beating out the competition to hire Don Baylor to manage their team.

Baylor, the hitting coach of the Atlanta Braves last season after six years as manager of the Colorado Rockies, had been courted by several major league teams, including the Anaheim Angels and Milwaukee Brewers.

While the Cubs declined to comment Sunday, his hiring was confirmed to The Associated Press by a senior major league team official who spoke on the condition he not be identified.

The Chicago Sun-Times reached Baylor at his home on Saturday and he confirmed the move.
