Adams County Ritzville
The Ritzville High School agricultural issues team has won the national title for the second straight year. The students, in a field of 26 teams, gave a presentation titled “Salmon Recovery: What Effect Would Breaching the Four Lower Snake River Dams Have on the Pacific Northwest?” Team members are Amy Hille, Katy Earp, Janell Grams, Amanda Whitman, Amber Shaffer and Robbi Hayes.
Ferry County Republic
Ferry County sheriff’s deputies are calling for a zero-tolerance policy on “deadbeat drivers” - adults who fail to buckle children in car seats. Starting Nov. 1, the Sheriff’s Department stepped up enforcement of child-restraint laws.
Grant County Moses Lake
The turnaround has been sweet for Pacific Northwest Sugar Co. Operations came to a halt last year due to equipment problems, but the company’s second harvest is going well this year. The plant set a record with 1.22 million pounds of sugar being refined in a single day.
Lincoln County Creston
The community is pulling together to help William and Lura Riley, who lost their home to fire last week. The Rileys, who had no insurance, lost all their family treasures and legal documents. A fund to help the Rileys has been set up at the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union.
Pend Oreille County Cusick
Veterans are invited to three public schools to observe Veterans Day on Thursday. Newport’s program is slated for the Sadie Halstead Middle School gymnasium at 8:30 a.m. At Selkirk, the program will begin at 10 a.m. in the gym. Cusick will honor veterans at 11 a.m.
Spokane County Spokane
The Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane celebrated on Monday its 75th year of caring for children and families of the Inland Northwest.
Stevens County Colville
Aladdin Hearth is putting the brakes on its $7 million project to construct a manufacturing and administrative facility at the north edge of town. The delay will give the company time to work with regulators regarding concerns about Aladdin’s new paint booth stacks.
Whitman County Pullman
Maggie Hernandez, a hairstylist in Pullman, recently won top honors in Fantastic Sam’s national artistic styling competition.

Benewah County St. Maries
United Way of Benewah County handed out $3,350 to 14 local nonprofit organizations recently, helping provide reference books, playground equipment and other items for the community.
Bonner County Sandpoint
A lawsuit brought by teachers against Bonner County School District 82 has been settled. Two lawsuits were filed June 30 in which three teachers claimed they weren’t being paid commensurate with their experience and education.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission is seeking people willing to fill a vacancy on the panel until Jan. 31, 2002. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Pappy Boyington Detachment of the U.S. Marine Corps celebrated the corps’ 224th birthday last weekend at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Guest speaker was retired Maj. Gen. Dennis Hauge of the U.S. Air Force. The Pappy Boyington Detachment was chartered Dec. 12, 1996, and was named for Gregory “Pappy” Boyington of Kellogg, a World War II Marine who received the Medal of Honor.
