Adams County Ritzville
Sunday’s meeting of the Adams County Historical Society will feature a performance by the Lamont Kitchen Kuties and a lecture on roughing it by mountain man Tony Adams. The meeting will be at 4 p.m. at the Circle T Inn.
Ferry County Republic
Operation Christmas Child is in full swing, with local residents filling shoeboxes with gifts and momentos for needy children throughout the world. Each box contains the Christmas story in the language of the recipient country. Last year, residents filled 67 boxes. This year, they hope to send more. Grant County Moses Lake
The Adam East Museum and Art Center is sponsoring its annual potato art exhibition and contest. The event, “Bakes, Mashed or Fried,” honors the humble tuber that is the lifeblood of area farmers. While many entries range from bizarre to wacky, all depict the proud potato for its endearing qualities. To enter, call (509) 766-9395.
Lincoln County Creston
Math educators from across the county and Ritzville recently got an education of their own. The teachers gathered in Creston to find out how digital cameras and the Internet can be used to help teach math. The teachers meet twice a year to update information and discuss what does and doesn’t work in the classroom.
Pend Oreille County Newport
The Pend Oreille County Historical Museum will be open every Friday and Saturday starting Nov. 26 and 27 and continuing in December. Wayne Antcliff’s toy train display will be the centerpiece of the depot building, along with the regular historical displays. For information, call (509) 447-5388.
Spokane County Cheney
Cheney will get a clean sweep on Sunday. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 200-300 members of Eastern Washington University’s six fraternities and five sororities will rake and sweep leaves to help tidy the streets of Cheney. This is the first time all 11 EWU Greek organizations have worked together on a philanthropic activity, Greek officials said.
Stevens County Colville
A new outreach program called Youth.Com is nearly ready to help runaways and homeless kids ages 12-17. The program’s mission is to bring families back together through counseling and support from host homes. Lloyd Ward, Youth.Com director, is the counselor at Northport High School.
Whitman County Colfax
The county library’s “Food for Fines,” food drive starts next week. The program allows residents who owe fines for overdue books to bring in food items instead of money Nov. 15-30. The value of the food items will be subtracted from the residents’ fines.

Benewah County St. Maries
The second phase of the water project for the city of Plummer will being Monday. The second phase will involved installing new pipe along P Street from Cooper Street to Eighth Street. The Plummer City Council will meet Monday to determine how much further the project can proceed before winter.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Elissa Glassman, communications director for Northern Lights, Inc., received two awards at the 1999 Excellence in Communications luncheon in Welches, Ore. NLI received awards for outstanding print ads for the second straight year. Glassman was coordinator of the ads. Judging for the competition was based on concept, message and execution.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Groundbreaking on the third Habitat for Humanity house in Boundary County was held last week. The recipient of the home is Coral Bass. Instead of a down payment, she and her family will pay 100 hours of work on the home, plus they promise to help on other Habitat homes. For information about the program, call (208) 267-1601.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Coeur d’Alene Public Library is celebrating Idaho Family Reading Week Nov. 14-20. The library will provide patrons with handouts, bookmarks and information about brain development beginning with infants. The books Music for Babies, Rhymes for Babies and copies of Read to Your Bunny will be available in a limited supply, courtesy of the Idaho State Library “Read To Me” project.
Latah County Moscow
Moscow-Pullman Daily News officials announced Friday that staff writer Steve McClure will succeed Roger Kendall as the new managing editor of the newspaper. Kendall is stepping down Dec. 10. McClure, a reporter at the paper since 1994, will start his new duties Dec. 13, according to the Daily News.
Shoshone County Kellogg
Federal forest funding for the Kellogg School District has decreased. The district has received its first payment, which was 56 percent less than last year’s payment. The board does not budget the forest fund money for anything that could be needed in the general fund such as salaries or maintenance, but keeps the fund for an emergency.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Troy
The Troy City Council on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to the proposed Osprey Bend land exchange. The city’s attorney will write a draft contract to trade parcels of land that will enable the development to move forward. Council members Ron Pierce, Laura Schrader and Loretta Jones voted in favor the proposed trade, in concept. Councilman John Brown abstained. The proposed exchange would trade 15 acres of city land for slightly more than 9 acres of Osprey Bend land.
