How they scored
First quarter
USC 7, Washington State 0
Chad Morton 7-yard run, David Newbury kick. Eight plays, 42 yards, 2:26. The Trojans running game, which has been much maligned, went straight up the middle against the Cougars defense and powered in for the first score of the game.
USC 7, WSU 7
Deon Burnett 22-yard run, Rian Lindell kick. Six plays, 73 yards, 2:27. Steve Birnbaum connected on passes of 15 and 8 yards, the Trojans helped out with a roughing-the-passer penalty, and Burnett did the rest of the work.
USC 14, WSU 7
Morton 3-yard run, Newbury kick. Nine plays, 80 yards, 4:18. USC quarterback John Fox found R. Jay Soward for a 42-yard pass down to the Cougars 32. The Cougars forced a fourth down on the 5-yard-line, but Morton dove over the top for a 2-yard gain.
Second quarter
USC 17, WSU 7
Newbury 34-yard field goal. Nine plays, 43 yards, 3:40. Morton’s 18-yard run off the right side put the Trojans in field goal range. WSU’s Curtis Holden forced the field goal by tackling Malaefou MacKenzie a yard short of the first down on a third-and-5.
USC 17, WSU 14
Marcus Williams 24-yard pass from Collin Henderson, Lindell kick. Four plays, 48 yards, :48. Henderson got the ball on a backward pass from Birnbaum and then hit Williams who stopped just short of the goal line to get clear of defensive back Antuan Simmons.
Third quarter
USC 24, WSU 14
Morton 1-yard run, Newbury kick. Ten plays, 92 yards 3:55. Fox got out of Holden’s grasp behind the line of scrimmage and went for 37 yards, the longest run from scrimmage for the Trojans this year. WSU’s LeJuan Gibbins was then called for pass interference on third-and-6 giving the Trojans a first down just outside the 20.
USC 31, WSU 14
Kris Richard 6-yard interception return, Newbury kick. Birnbaum, with pressure coming from both sides and not wanting to take a sack in the end zone, threw the ball up for grabs. Richard grabbed it and went into the end zone.
USC 31, WSU 21
Nian Taylor 5-yard pass from Birnbaum, Lindell kick. Eight plays, 80 yards, 2:26. Two penalties on the Trojans allowed the Cougars to pick up first downs and keep the drive alive. Wide receiver Farwan Zubedi also came up with two receptions for 28 yards.
Fourth quarter
USC 31, WSU 28
Taylor 5-yard pass from Birnbaum, Lindell kick. Fifteen plays, 84 yards, 4:08. With the clock working against them, the Cougars went to the air. Leaford Hackett caught a pass for 17 yards, Williams had two for 29 yards and Taylor came up the clutch catch in the end zone.
