Isolationism Defined By Walla Walla Reader From The Spokesman-Review, Nov. 6, 1950

To the editor of The Spokesman-Review:

Isolationist is the confusion cry of the Democrat for this century. For a long time it was free trade.

I blame the Republicans themselves, for the condition today.

If every Republican orator who stood on a platform had not explained that they were against free trade because they were trying to protect our workers from cheap foreign goods, the Democrats would never have been able to figure it out and would still be talking for free trade.

However, after 20 years, the Republicans finally convinced the Democrats, and now they have gone us one better by hanging wages on Jack’s bean stalk.

The Republican definition of isolationist is spending their own money in foreign countries. The Democrats want to spend other people’s money in foreign countries, so they are not isolationists.

In every game where there is a big rakeoff, the gent running the game doesn’t like penny ante.

Every new foreign enterprise means that more millionaire lounge lizards will gladly donate a few hundred thousand for a foreign appointment, considering the social advantages to more than offset the money. C.F. Dement Walla Walla
