Group history: Four of the group’s seven members began meeting monthly about 10 years ago, alternating between member homes. Take turns choosing books to read, concentrating both on recognized classics, “Shakespeare through Tolstoy and Twain to Faulkner, Doig and Vonnegut,” and more contemporary works. Chooser supplies the books, author information and refreshments.

Book reviewed: “The Inn at Lake Devine” (Vintage Books, 253 pages, $12 paper) by Elinor Lipman.

Group representative: Louise Braun.

The review: Two members, Gail and Ron Webster, had met author Lipman during a layover at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. “They sent her wine,” group representative Louise Braun says. “She sent them books.” And then she joined the group on a conference call Q&A. Lipman’s novel involves the story of Jewish girl who develops a yearslong obsession with the anti-Semitic owners of the summer inn at Lake Devine. “I should also say that the book is a coming-of-age and love story,” Braun says.
