Adams County Ritzville
Recent dust storms didn’t spare Adams County roads. Portions of Marcellus, Hills, Cunningham and Roxboro roads were closed for several hours during the dust storm. Visibility was so low, deputies had to block some roads with vehicles until barricades could be brought in.
Ferry County Republic
The Republic School Booster Club needs a boost. The club is looking for new members to help raise money and awareness of school needs. Both academic and co-curricular needs are discussed by the group. Dues are $5 for individuals and $10 per family. Call the school to get involved.
Grant County Moses Lake
Local high school administration is not interested in baby-sitting kids during home football games. The district is making it mandatory that any elementary or middle school child be accompanied by an adult. Up to 300 kids mill around the concession stand, not watching the action, at each game, officials said. Fights and alcohol use are problems as well, they say.
Lincoln County Davenport
Local high school students are learning the responsibilities that come with running your own business. The students “own” and operate the Gorilla Snack Shack. Items for sale run from 50 cents to $1.25. Although it may sound like small change, the experience is anything but. Marketing, inventory, ordering, customer service and cleanup skills are being put to the test.
Pend Oreille County Usk
Is Pend Oreille County ready for a foreign trade zone? Officials at the Port of Pend Oreille think so. The port is looking into such a zone to attract import-export trade and manufacturing. A foreign trade zone is a trade zone outside the customs area which would promote international commerce. Jobs and commercial revenues are the major benefits.
Spokane County Spokane
State transportation officials will talk about plans for improving U.S. Highway 195 through Latah Valley at a public information meeting Wednesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce, at 7 p.m.
Stevens County Colville
Police have pledged to wear out Third Avenue’s new pavement. The $2.7 million transportation project is opened for traffic. Because a newly paved road - especially a wide one with curbs and sidewalks - invites speeders, Police Chief Damon Meshishnek says the 25 and 35 mph speed limits will be strictly enforced by more patrols.
Whitman County Colfax
Local telephone carriers are not happy with the Port of Whitman County. Port commissioners are proposing a high-speed telecommunications center. The five telephone carriers in the county are not in favor of the plan and feel a partnership is more advisable. Port officials challenged the telephone companies to install the high-speed cable, an expensive proposition for a rural area.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
Repairs to the Cherry Creek levee made this month by the Army Corps of Engineers maintenance program cost more than $110,000 and did not stop leaks. The levee protects the Shepherd’s Lagoon residential area from flooding.
Anna Campbell, a geologist for the corps said, “Leaks in the land side of the levee are fairly common in that area.” She also said the leaks will not cause structural damage.
Although the corps plans to cap the Cherry Creek Dike later this month, it may not try to fix the existing leaks.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Home-schooled students in grades three through 11 may take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Tests of Achievement and Proficiency along with Lake Pend Oreille School District 84 students. The test will be given Oct. 4 through Nov. 5. Parents should contact their local school’s principal to arrange participation. For information, call (208) 263-2184.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Panhandle Area Council will receive $529,643 in federal money to support its School-to-Work Program. The program unites businesses and labor, families and community organization with educators to help students realize the relationship between academics and career interest. The money will ensure the program is selfsustaining when federal funding ends next year.

Shoshone County Kellogg
Dust mats are available from the Panhandle Health District to prevent the tracking of contaminated materials into homes during the Milo Creek Improvement Project. Mats should be used outside homes at the most frequently used entrance. Replacements for dirty mats are available from the Milo Creek office at 1005 W. McKinley or by calling (208) 783-5304.

American Field Service of the Libby/Troy area will hold an informational meeting for students and parents at 7 p.m. tonight at the Libby Middle School library, on Education Way.
