Five years ago: The United States sent troops and warships to the Persian Gulf after Saddam Hussein sent tens of thousands of elite troops and hundreds of tanks toward the Kuwaiti border.

One year ago: Ariel Sharon returned to the center of power in Israel as the country’s new foreign minister.
