Colville Upsets Cda ‘Varsity’

Strange things happened at Colville Tuesday afternoon.

Coeur d’Alene’s soccer team, unbeaten in eight Border League matches, marched into Colville and promptly lost 3-1.

Colville entered the match 0-8 in league and 2-9-1 overall. Colville’s Stacy McConnell, who left the match with a bloody nose, returned to score her second goal in the second half.

Colville’s coach reported that CdA arrived with mainly a junior varsity team. Colville had its JV ready to play on another field, but just one match occurred: Colville’s varsity vs. the JV-laden CdA team.

The match counts in league standings, which means CdA (13-1-2 over-all) must win at Moscow Saturday to tie Lake City for first place.

Also in the league, Hayley Shortridge totaled three goals and four assists as Lake City (12-1-1, 9-1) defeated visiting Post Falls 9-1 to complete its league schedule. The Timberwolves will have an opening-round bye into the A-1 Region I tournament, which begins Monday. … Also in the league, Jesy Rosholt dribbled past two defenders and scored the go-ahead goal into the left corner, lifting Sandpoint (7-3-1, 6-2) to a 2-1 win at Cheney (7-6, 5-4). Sandpoint plays at Lake City Thursday. Cheney’s final league match is Thursday, at West Valley.

Volleyball

Courtney Goetz had 22 kills, 14 digs and 12 blocks as visiting Moscow (18-4, 7-1) outlasted Colville 6-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-5, 15-9 in the Border League… . Also in the league, Kendrea Meyer came off the bench to total 12 kills and 11 digs in Sandpoint’s 3-0 win over visiting West Valley. Sandpoint (20-1, 8-0) plays at Cheney Thursday night to complete its league season… . Katie Jo Shirley totaled five kills and four aces in Coeur d’Alene’s 2-0 win over visiting Lewiston (3-5). The Vikings are 5-3… . Rachel Mogen totaled 11 kills and three blocks as visiting Lake City (4-4) beat Post Falls 2-1. PF’s Cindy Holland had five of her eight kills during a first-game win.

Tiffany Holdahl served 7 for 7 in the second game, and finished the match with four consecutive aces, as St. Maries (21-3, 8-0) defeated visiting Kellogg 2-0 in the Intermountain League. The Lumberjacks’ Ariene Wilcott added six kills, three blocks and 6-for-6 serving on senior night… . Also in the IML, Megan Egbert and Jessica Austad combined for 13 of Lakeland’s 24 kills in a 2-0 win at Priest River. Anika Duvall added 18 assists for the Hawks (14-8, 8-1). Lakeland is host to St. Maries Thursday, with the title on the line.

Natalie Autio served six consecutive points in the second game and eight straight in the third, helping Mullan (3-1) rally past visiting Falls Christian 12-15, 15-2, 15-13 in the North Star League. Mullan’s Adina Winstead added 36 assists.

Lindsay Carrico served 13 for 14, and combined with Rachelle Zent for 23 kills as visiting Wallace (16-6, 8-2) defeated Lakeside 10-15, 15-9, 15-6 in a Central Idaho League match at Plummer. Michelle Kelley had seven kills and six digs for Lakeside.

Kayla Howlett and Taylor Cady had nine kills apiece in Bonners Ferry’s 3-1 non-league win at Chewelah… . Logos defeated Kootenai 2-0 at Harrison. Jocelyn Flint and Monica Kraack had three digs apiece for Kootenai.

Boys soccer

Theron Desmet drove past four defenders for the final goal in Lake City’s 3-0 win over visiting Lewiston. Lake City (8-6, 7-4 North Idaho League) completes its league schedule Saturday at Coeur d’Alene (8-1-1 NIL). The regional tournament begins Tuesday… . Lakeland’s match at Post Falls was moved to 4 p.m. today, still at Post Falls… . Bonners Ferry defeated CdA’s JV 7-0.
