Soccer Showdowns On Tap

The Greater Spokane League volleyball season will end in the next 10 days with a mad dash for first place.

After Tuesday night’s matches, Shadle Park is 8-0, Ferris 7-0 and Mead 6-1.

The smoke will begin to clear Thursday night, when Mead plays at Ferris. Shadle jumps into the action Tuesday, at home against Ferris.

In Tuesday’s 3-0 sweeps, Krissy Forry and Katie Schurra combined for 23 kills in Shadle’s win at North Central… . Shayla Bush and Joelene Bogle combined for 27 kills and 27 digs in Ferris’ home win over Gonzaga Prep. Nicole Brouillard and Beth Vercic added eight kills apiece for Ferris, which won the first game 15-13 after trailing 12-8… . Mead, last Saturday’s Crossover Classic champion, received five aces from Wendy Baker in a win over visiting Central Valley… . Lewis and Clark (5-2) took a two-game lead over a group in fifth place with a 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, 15-12 win at East Valley. Amy Kauppila and Meghan Sanborn combined for 33 LC kills. EV, G-Prep and NC are tied for fifth place at 3-4. The top six teams advance to the district tournament… . Mt. Spokane (2-5) tied idle Rogers for eighth place, one game behind the fifth-place trio, with a 3-0 sweep at University. Tara Amistoso had nine kills and Sara Miller eight blocks for Mt. Spokane, which earned its second GSL win in history.

Courtney Goetz of Moscow (7-1) finished with 22 kills, 14 digs and 12 blocks during a 6-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-5, 15-9 win at Colville (4-3) in the Border League. Down 2-0, Moscow opened the next three games with leads of 7-1, 8-1 and 6-1. Colville’s Lindsey Terry had 12 kills and five blocks… . Also in the league, Kendrea Meyer came off the bench to total 12 kills and 11 digs in Sandpoint’s 3-0 win over visiting West Valley. Sandpoint (8-0) plays at Cheney Thursday night to complete its league season… . Katie Jo Shirley totaled five kills and four aces in Coeur d’Alene’s 2-0 win over visiting Lewiston (3-5). CdA is 5-3… . Rachel Mogen totaled 11 kills as visiting Lake City (4-4) defeated Post Falls 2-1. PF’s Cindy Holland had five of her eight kills during a first-game win.

Jen Barcus finished with 20 kills and five blocks as Lakeside (8-0) defeated Riverside 3-0 in a Great Northern League match at Riverside.

Davenport (6-0) has the upper hand in the Bi-County League after a 15-11, 15-7 home-court victory over second-place Wilbur-Creston (5-2).

Girls soccer

Stacy McConnell scored twice as Colville (3-9-1, 1-8) pulled the upset of the year, 3-1 over visiting Coeur d’Alene (12-1-2, 8-1) in the Border League. McConnell missed part of the match with a bloody nose. Colville reported that CdA arrived with mainly junior varsity players. Colville’s JV was ready to play a match at another field, but the only match was Colville’s varsity vs. the players CdA brought to town… . Also in the league, Jesy Rosholt dribbled past two defenders and scored the go-ahead goal into the left corner, lifting Sandpoint (6-2) to a 2-1 win at Cheney (5-4). Cheney’s final league match is Thursday, at West Valley. … Hayley Shortridge totaled three goals and four assists as Lake City (12-1-1, 9-1) defeated visiting Post Falls 9-1 to complete its league schedule with at least a tie for first place… . Heidi Oakes scored both goals in Lewiston’s 2-0 win over Lakeland at Rathdrum.

Suzanne Rieseberg had seven shots on goal, scoring twice from 18 yards, and visiting Lakeside (4-3) defeated Chewelah 3-0 in the Great Northern League. Chewelah (2-5) lost to Lakeside 7-0 three weeks ago… . Laura Hamby’s two goals and three assists led Riverside (7-0) to a 6-0 win over visiting Medical Lake (2-5). Jamie Rizzuto added three goals for the Rams, giving her six in the last two matches… . Molly Neill scored the first two goals during Pullman’s 5-1 win over visiting Deer Park. Pullman is 6-1.

CROSS COUNTRY Riverside goes to 4-0 Riverside’s boys and girls both improved to 4-0 with double wins at a Great Northern League meet in Deer Park. Medical Lake’s Robby Miller won the boys race, finishing the 3.1 miles in 17 minutes, 3 seconds, but Riverside took the next five positions. Riverside’s girls finished 1-4, led by Katie Prichard’s 21:53. … Sarah Bell ran 20:34 for 3.1 miles to help Newport (2-0) edge Chewelah 27-28 in a girls meet at Chewelah. Chewelah (1-2) won the boys meet 26-29, although Newport’s Reece Warren (17:58) was champion… . Champions Shawn Close (17:02) and Lisa Erickson (20:44) led Lakeside to wins over Pullman on a 3-mile course at Nine Mile Falls Elementary. Both Lakeside teams are 2-0.
