Aggressive Titans Thump Tigers

GSL soccer/volleyball

The Lewis and Clark girls soccer team doesn’t look the same without Janine McNally.

The Tigers sweeper stood on crutches on the sidelines at Hart Field on Friday and watched as University’s physical and aggressive style was too much for the Tigers.

The Titans beat LC to the ball most of the match in their 5-2 Greater Spokane League win as junior Kara Jordan scored three goals. She has four this season, but hadn’t scored since U-Hi took a nonleague win over Mt. Spokane on Sept. 13.

McNally broke her right foot in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over East Valley and is done for the season. Coach Harlan Slind tested three players in her spot Friday, but hasn’t decided who will fill it.

The Titans (6-4 overall, 3-4 GSL), who outshot the Tigers 25-19, are the only team besides first-place Mead to beat LC (9-3, 5-2) in league. U-Hi has lost once in a shootout, once in overtime and twice by one goal. LC dropped to third place, behind Shadle Park, based on the league points system.

“I’ve always thought we were a top team, but we’ve been unlucky all year long,” U-Hi coach Brandon Deyarmin said of the defending league champs. “We weren’t getting any breaks.”

Two players left the game with injuries. U-Hi sophomore April Kawamoto was taken down in the second half by Courtney Johnson and suffered a possible broken collarbone. She was taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center. Johnson received a red card on the play and Slind, who already had received a yellow card warning, was issued a red card for arguing the call.

Johnson and Slind won’t be able to participate in LC’s game with Ferris on Monday. Deyarmin also received a yellow card for arguing.

Lewis and Clark’s Kayla Constable had to leave the game 10 minutes after Kawamoto. Slind said she may have bruised a rib, but it wasn’t serious.

LC knew it would be a physical game.

“I don’t know why we weren’t stepping up,” said senior Carly Sanchez. “I think we were intimidated at first because we knew they were really aggressive.”

Also in the GSL, Janie Strait scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime, lifting first-place Mead (7-1) to a 3-2 win over visiting Central Valley (4-3). Laura McKinley’s rebound goal after an indirect free kick tied the match at 2. Raeanna Jewell scored both CV goals, from 10-12 yards… . Jamie Vanos scored on a breakaway and set up a goal by Kelly Dyreson, leading Shadle Park (5-3) to a 3-0 win at Gonzaga Prep. The Highlanders moved into second place… . Seneca Shank scored the final two goals and Cassie Kitchen had two assists as visiting Mt. Spokane (5-2) defeated Rogers 6-0 to jump into fourth place… . Jessica Bowen scored on a penalty kick late in the first half, and Tiera Como made nine saves as East Valley (4-3) held off visiting Ferris 1-0. EV moved within one point of the fifth-place Saxons (5-2).

Jessica Huntley scored the final goal in West Valley’s 3-1 Border League win at Post Falls. WV (3-5-1) won despite being outshot 23-5. The Trojans’ score came after a WV player received a red call for arguing a call.

Setter Crissa Poole tied for the team lead with 10 kills, and visiting University (1-8) upset Rogers 7-15, 15-4, 15-4, 5-15, 15-11 in the Greater Spokane League. Nila Gregory added 10 kills and 10 blocks as the Titans handed first-year coach Amanda Velasquez her first league win. Rogers (2-6) led the final game 6-3. The Pirates needed a win to remain in the playoff hunt, one behind a group of three teams in fifth place at 4-4.
