Rams Break Through

Riverside’s long wait ended Friday night.

Kevin Hersom batted down a 2-point conversion pass in the fourth quarter, securing Riverside’s 7-6 win over visiting Newport in the Great Northern League.

Riverside (1-5, 1-3) had lost 16 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in the state. Newport is 1-3, 0-3.

Riverside scored on its first drive. John Warner, who finished the day with 132 yards, had 25 yards during the 75-yard drive. David Westenskow ran for a 4-yard touchdown.

Newport recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter and scored in seven plays. After Josh Elmer’s 12-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Jordan, the Grizzlies went for the go-ahead conversion and were foiled by Hersom.

Also in the GNL, Emery Meeks rushed for 190 yards on 19 carries, scoring three TDs on runs of 23 yards or more, and Medical Lake (4-2, 4-0) defeated visiting Chewelah 42-8. Cardinals QB Charley Berryhill completed 3 of 5 for 112 yards and one TD… . Trent Bray caught four passes for 124 yards and two TDs in second-ranked Pullman’s 40-20 win over Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls. Brian Zeches of the Greyhounds (6-0, 3-0) completed 17 of 28 for 253 yards and three TDs. Cody Brown of the Eagles (3-3, 2-1) rushed for 93 yards on 17 carries.

NORTHEAST A LEAGUE

Freeman freezes Kettle Falls offense

League-leading Kettle Falls (4-2, 2-1) took a nosedive, falling 8-0 at Freeman (2-4, 1-2). Chris Fulkerson had 11 tackles and scored the only TD, on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Jake DePell of Freeman completed 12 of 20 for 119 yards… . Colfax (5-1, 2-1) jumped into a tie for first, as Matt Gylling rushed for 94 yards and threw for 57 during a 28-6 win at Liberty. Colt Hedden added 76 yards on 15 carries for Colfax, which reportedly hadn’t defeated Liberty in at least 23 years. Liberty’s Ben Holling rushed for 104 yards and completed 11 of 22 for 120 yards, six of the passes for 90 yards to his brother, Jake Holling.

Reardan chant: Toro, Toro, Toro

Bruno Toro passed for three TDs as third-ranked Reardan (6-0, 4-0) defeated Almira/Coulee-Hartline 54-0 at Coulee City. Aaron Landreth of the Indians added 56 rushing yards, 36 receiving yards and three TDs. Blaine Carstensen of ACH rushed for 67 yards… . Jason Heider completed 13 of 23 for 213 yards and three TDs, leading fifth-ranked Ritzville (5-1, 3-1) to a 34-0 win at Republic. Brett Arlt had seven receptions for 92 yards, and Nick Portrey had 17 tackles for Ritzville. Republic’s Eddie Olson rushed for 60 yards on 15 carries… . Andy Schreck rushed for 156 yards and three TDs on 16 carries, and added nine assists on tackles in seventh-ranked Davenport’s 38-7 win over visiting Springdale. Clark Pauls added nine tackles and a fumble recovery, and Greg Hein was 6 of 12 for 127 yards for the Gorillas (5-1, 3-1)… . Jeff Krause rushed for 69 yards and added 53 receiving yards as Wilbur-Creston defeated Selkirk 14-0 at Wilbur. W-C’s Scott Larkin completed 6 of 11 for 96 yards. For Selkirk, Corey Damron rushed for 66 yards and Cody Carlson passed for 81.

No waiting for Waitsburg scores

Curtis Johnson threw for 79 yards and three TDs in Waitsburg’s 43-0 win over visiting Garfield-Palouse. Scott Mason added 56 rushing yards and two TDs, one on a pass, for the Cardinals (4-2, 2-2). Gar-Pal was held to eight yards of offense… . Casey Richard rushed for 178 yards and a TD on 27 carries, and second-ranked DeSales (5-0, 3-0) defeated Pomeroy 24-12 at Walla Walla. DeSales is on a 16-game winning streak.

Becker batters Lind line

Austin Becker rushed for four TDs and 217 yards on nine carries, leading Sprague-Harrington (5-1) to a 45-6 win over Lind at Harrington. The game ended midway through the third quarter, at Lind’s request. The Falcons finished with 339 rushing yards. Lind, limited to 12 players, had zero net yards rushing. The Falcons’ Aaron Henry had nine tackles, six unassisted… . David Tonasket rushed for 153 yards and two TDs on eight carries, and added two interceptions in fourth-ranked Inchelium’s 46-0 win over visiting Wellpinit. John Simmons had seven tackles for the Hornets (6-0)… . Dusty Person ran for a 93-yard TD and caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Jake Sattleen, helping Cusick (4-2, 3-2) rally from a 14-0 deficit for a 34-26 win at Odessa. Heath Voise completed 16 of 23 for 274 yards, three TDs and no interceptions for Odessa.

NON-LEAGUE

Option play’s the thing for Othello Quarterback Joe Brandenburg rushed for 168 yards out of the option, lifting 10th-ranked Othello (5-1) to a 41-6 win over visiting Deer Park (4-2). DP’s Ty Thompson completed 11 of 22 for 145 yards and a TD, but was intercepted three times… . Jubilee Christian (3-3) defeated Ione, Ore., 30-20 on the road… . Borah defeated Lewiston 14-6 at Boise, dropping the Bengals to 3-4.

No doubting Touchet’s ranking

Top-ranked Touchet (6-0, 3-0) defeated second-ranked Colton 53-12 in a showdown at Touchet. The defending state-champion Indians improved their state-best winning streak to 18 games. Colton is 5-1, 3-1… . Elsewhere, Ryan Meline rushed for 275 yards on 21 carries and had six TDs as visiting Kahlotus (4-2, 3-1) defeated Rosalia 86-36. John Workman of Rosalia rushed for 176 yards on 13 carries… . Fifth-ranked LaCrosse-Washtucna (5-1, 2-1) piled up a 56-12 win at Prescott.

INTERMOUNTAIN LEAGUE

Grangeville tops Bonners Ferry

Josh Wickstrom rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, guiding Grangeville to a 35-17 win over visiting Bonners Ferry.

Beau Woodford of the Bulldogs (3-4, 3-2) added a school-record 99-yard kick return for a TD, and four catches for 66 yards.

The Badgers dropped to 0-7, 0-5.

In other games, Lakeland shut out Orofino 35-0, Kellogg whipped Priest River 24-8 and St. Maries outscored Timberlake 43-28.

NORTH STAR LEAGUE

School records fall for Falls

Ben Danforth rushed for a school-record 320 yards on 28 carries and scored five times as Falls Christian Academy (3-4, 3-2) defeated Mullan 64-26 at Post Falls. Charlie Dowers also broke an Eagles record with four interceptions.

CENTRAL IDAHO LEAGUE

Snyder gets baking for Kamiah

Cole Snyder rushed for 194 yards and three TDs on 12 carries and Kamiah (7-1, 5-1) defeated Lakeside 41-6 at Plummer.
