Forest Litter Back
Camping
Using a one-time $15,000 allocation, more than 10,000 cubic yards of garbage were removed from 250 campsites on the St. Joe District of the Panhandle National Forests.
“Virtually everything you might find in someone’s boneyard at home was found, including the kitchen sink,” said Mary Price, the district’s recreation manager.
A few weekends ago, garbage was already piling at some of the sites.
“Overall, people are being respectful, and many of the popular sites look very good,” said George Bain, district ranger. “However, we did find very poor examples of garbage piles, caches of gear and impacts to lake and stream edges.”
