Christmas Stamp
The traditional Madonna and Child Christmas stamp was issued Wednesday by the Postal Service. The stamp, featuring a painting by 15th century Venetian artist Bartolomeo Vivarini, was released in ceremonies at the National Gallery of Art. “The Madonna and child symbolize hope, renewal, and family; values we cherish most at this season of the year,” said Mary S. Elcano, general counsel of the post office. Designed by Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, Ariz., the stamp has the word “Christmas” in capital letters across the top. In addition to the Madonna and Child stamp, the Postal Service will also issue several other holiday stamps.
