Heisman watch
Shaun Alexander, Alabama, was solid, but far from spectacular against Tennessee, with 98 yards rushing and 148 all-purpose yards. He scored Alabama’s only touchdown on a 26-yard pass from Andrew Zow.
Drew Brees, Purdue, passed for two touchdowns and 379 yards - the most yielded by Penn State all season. But he had a pass intercepted and returned 25 yards for a touchdown by defensive end Courtney Brown. The Lions got another score when LaVar Arrington sacked Brees and caused a fumble, which he returned two yards for a TD.
Ron Dayne rushed for 214 yards and 2 TDs in No. 17 Wisconsin’s 40-10 victory over No. 11 Michigan State. The Badgers rolled up 301 yards on the ground against a team that had allowed just 279 yards rushing in its first seven games.

Peter Warrick, Florida State: OK, he got in a little trouble and missing two games didn’t completely take him out of the race. But the fact is, he’s no Troy Walters. Warrick had 11 receptions for 121 yards against Clemson.

Chad Pennington threw five TDs to become the sixth player in NCAA history with 100 touchdown passes as No. 15 Marshall defeated Buffalo 59-3.
Louisville’s Chris Redman was 27 of 53 for 397 yards and became the NCAA’s career leader with 1,554 pass attempts, breaking Ty Detmer’s record of 1,530.
Sacks
No. 14 Georgia sacked Kentucky quarterback Dusty Bonner 11 times in a 49-34 win. The Bulldogs defense had only 12 sacks in their first six games.

Northern Illinois defeated Kent for the Huskies’ fourth win in a row. Just last year, Northern Illinois had the nation’s longest losing streak, with 23 defeats.

Rutgers’ loss to Pittsburgh came just 48 hours after athletic director Robert E. Mulcahy ended speculation about the future of Scarlet Knights’ coach Terry Shea by announcing that he would be back in 2000 for a fifth season. Shea is now 7-33 in four-plus seasons.

After 108 years, the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi couldn’t be much closer.When Kansas beat Missouri 21-0, Missouri’s series lead was trimmed to 50-49-9.

Penn State’s victory was the 315th for Joe Paterno, moving him past Amos Alonzo Stagg into third place among major college coaches and within eight of Bear Bryant’s record total.
Not far behind is Bobby Bowden, who got his 300th win when Florida State defeated Clemson.
