Othello
School means more than just learning. It signals lice season. Othello school nurse Joann Keele says she’s proud of the inroads she’s made into lice control in her 13 years with the district. Her first year on the job was marred with 200 cases. Now, she and her lice patrol see maybe 50. She says that’s due to educational efforts, encouraging kids not to share hats and coats and regular head checks.

The local Les Schwab dealer is seeing a lot of hunters. Sponsoring the Lucky Buck contest, the dealership had 22 entries to the contest with four days left in the season. Leading at that time was a white tail, six-by-five pointer. As for the town herd, these deer are staying safe by staying within the city limits where guns are prohibited. And, they are traveling in a pack of at least seven.

Soap Lake
The second time was a charm for the Soap Lake School District. Disappointed with construction bids for a new elementary school and renovations of the middle/high school building, the district rebid the contract. This time, KOP Construction of Spokane took the contract with a $10.28 million bid. If all goes well, the building will be ready by fall 2000.

What do local firemen do with 28 pounds of pancake mix? They feed hungry hunters. The annual Hunter’s Breakfast was a whopping success with 150 people served the all-you-can-eat bonanza. The fire and ambulance crew went through 45 pounds of hash browns, 40 pounds of ham, 28 pounds of sausage and 30 dozen eggs.

Construction on the Pend Oreille Valley Habitat for Humanity house here is moving quickly. Volunteers have completed the floor deck and main floor framing, and are beginning on the second floor and roof. The group needs help Saturday, Oct. 30 to put on a roof so they can schedule special jobs throughout the winter months.

Phillip Daubel, a 1997 Riverside High School graduate, recently graduated from Mitchell College in New London, Conn., with high honors - a 3.8 grade point average. Daubel also received All-American athletic and academic honors in men’s soccer from the National Junior College Athletic Association.

The Washington State University Museum of Art will present the Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition from Tuesday through Dec. 17 in the museum gallery. The annual exhibition provides an opportunity for museum visitors to enjoy recent and past work by current and retired members of the WSU Department of Fine Arts. The opening reception will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.

St. Maries
The Logger Education to Advance Professionalism course for loggers who want to learn more about tree biology and forest ecology will be Nov. 3-5 in St. Maries. The program, sponsored by the University of Idaho, includes two days of indoor instruction and one day of field exercises. Teachers from UI and the Department of Lands will instruct the course. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program “North Idaho Reads!” is seeking volunteers. The program partners elementary school children with senior citizens in tutoring sessions. Volunteers must enjoy books and children and commit 30 minutes twice a week. Volunteers are needed in Priest River and at Osburn, Washington, Stidwell and Lakeside elementary schools. University of Idaho scientist Christine Moffitt sometimes ponders the fate of the nation’s fisheries through the pages of cookbooks. As the new president of the American Fisheries Society, she sees some current trends as recipes for disaster.
At 9,000 members, the 130-year-old society is America’s largest and oldest professional organization of fisheries scientists. After assuming the presidency in September, Moffitt challenged the group to use its five-year strategic plan as a tool to meet the challenges of a new millennium.

The Lincoln County commissioners recently approved the purchase of two used cars for county use. A 1998 Mercury Sable was purchased for $12,374 and will go to Libby District Commissioner Rita Windom. The county also purchased a 1998 Ford Taurus for $12,325 for Eureka District Commissioner Marianne Roose.
