Spangle Appointees Unopposed In/Around: Spangle
Political changes in Spangle have given citizens a full slate of municipal candidates in this year’s election.
Newly appointed Mayor William Sievers is running unopposed for his position.
Sievers has served nine years on the Spangle Town Council and works as a farmer in the Spangle area. He became mayor earlier this year when former Mayor John Logan stepped down.
Sievers will work under a council that would include three new appointees who are running unopposed in next Tuesday’s election.
They include Greg Holmes, who runs a small business in Spokane, in Position 1; Ronald Zielke, who is retired, in Position 2; and Donald Mangis, who works for the city of Cheney, in Position 3.
Holmes was appointed to Sievers’ former council position, and Zielke stepped into the council job previously held by Carol Hirschel, who recently became the town’s clerk-treasurer.
The council has been busy building the town’s infrastructure in recent years and getting ready for possible population growth, Hirschel said.
A new wastewater treatment plant expands the town’s growth capacity from its former limit of 135 sewer hookups to as many as 680 hookups in the future.
The council reduced sewer rates by $10 a month to $35 and is looking at another reduction after the town proves that its monthly rates are more than enough to repay loans for the plant’s construction.
Hirschel said the next challenge is to sink a new well to supply water for growth. The town is seeking a community development grant for the project.
Also, the town is planning to improve two of its streets - Second and Terra Firma - with a state grant next year. However, that project could be killed if voters approve Initiative 695, Hirschel said.
