Spokane had two top-five teams when the Amateur Softball Association Men’s A Modified National Championship Tournament wound up in Marietta, Ga.

The Grinders, after winning their first five games, lost twice Monday to finish third in the 58-team field. Coors Light of Spokane was fifth.

The Grinders, fifth when the tournament was held in Spokane last year, lost to Ocean Glass from Massachusetts and Budweiser of Maryland. Scores were not available.

Coors Light had a 4-2 record.

Mahlon Kerwick of Spokane will represent the U.S. in the Bank of America/Olympic Cup in San Diego Thursday through Sunday.

Competition will be held in women’s basketball and softball; men’s and women’s beach volleyball and swimming; and boxing.

Russia and the Ukraine, among the top three teams in the world, and Mexico will join the U.S. in boxing.

Kerwick, 18, a 1999 graduate of University High School, who is attending Northern Michigan University, also is scheduled to fight in a match against Cuba this month.

College women’s soccer

A 2-1 win Monday over neighboring rival Washington State earned the University of Idaho the Governor’s Cup in the windup of the four-team competition.

UI (2-0-1), which got goals from Christine Rennick and Sara Best, had a 1-0-1 record in the tournament. Idaho State was 1-0-1, but UI won the Cup on a tiebreaker. WSU (1-1) was third and Boise State fourth.

Rennick scored on a rebound at 40 minutes, the first goal against WSU keeper Lindsey Jorgensen in 260 minutes dating to last year. Best rebounded a header past Jorgensen at 54 minutes for the winner. Brianne Carmody scored for WSU in the 44th minute just before halftime.

Keri Nichols’ goal at 43:33 was all Eastern Washington could muster as the Eagles (0-2) dropped a 6-1 decision at Cal State Fullerton.

Amy Barnes had three goals and an assist for the Titans (2-2), who outshot the Eagles 27-11, including a 19-6 margin the first half.
