Cougars Split At Tourney
Freshman Meghan Barkman had 23 kills and hit .541 as 23rd-ranked Colorado (5-1) defeated Washington State’s volleyball team 3-1 Saturday at the Jones Intercable Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Colorado had more kills (90), assists (78) and blocks (20) than any teams the Cougars have faced this year. The teams had met just once before, in 1981.
The Cougars (5-2) opened the day with a 15-7, 15-13, 9-15, 9-15, 15-12 marathon win over New Mexico. The Cougars had been 0-3 in previous matches against the Lobos.
WSU’s Joy Sperry finished the day with 37 kills and 34 digs. Missy Blackshire added 29 kills and 25 digs. Both made the all-tournament team.
WSU opens Pacific-10 Conference play Friday night at home against seventh-ranked Stanford.
Angie Hall finished the day with 30 kills and Lacey Coover added 34 digs, as Eastern Washington (7-2) won the Fresno State Invitational with a 4-0 record.
The Eagles defeated both Cal Poly and Oral Roberts 3-0 on the final day. EWU’s Jennifer Dick had 15 kills in the championship vs. Oral Roberts.
EWU’s Kim Maxwell was the tournament’s most valuable player. She had 81 assists Saturday.
All-tournament selections Erin Adams and Kodi Taylor combined for 25 kills and 10 blocks, and Montana (6-1) defeated Gonzaga 3-1 for the championship of the Boise State Fall Classic.
Heather Osberg and Britt Whiting of the Bullodogs (2-5), also all-tournament selections, combined for 29 kills and 15 digs.
Tournament MVP Regan Butler led Idaho to the title of the Georgia State Tournament in Atlanta.
Butler had 40 kills in four matches over the weekend. Shalyne Lynch, who had 27 kills Saturday, and Anna Reznicek, who added 22, also made the all-tournament team.
The Vandals (6-2), on a five-game winning streak, defeated both Charleston Southern and the host Panthers 3-0 in the final day.
Women’s soccer
Heidi Bohnett scored two first-half goals in Whitworth’s 2-0 win over visiting Carroll College (0-3).
Dalyce Young of the Pirates (1-2-1) set up Bohnett’s first goal, a header, with a corner kick. Bohnett also scored on a penalty shot, shooting to the right of a wall of five defenders.
Men’s soccer
Sau’l Mendoza had one goal and one assist in Community Colleges of Spokane’s 4-0 victory over Shoreline CC at Spokane Falls CC.
TRIATHLON Buder triumphs Madonna Buder of Spokane won the 65-69 title at the Age Group Triathlon World Championship in Montreal on Saturday. Buder won in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 7 seconds. The race consisted of 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run.
