Ten years ago: David Dinkins, Manhattan borough president, won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, defeating incumbent Mayor Ed Koch and two other candidates on his way to becoming the city’s first black mayor.

Five years ago: A stolen, single-engine Cessna crashed into the South Lawn of the White House, coming to rest against the executive mansion; the pilot, Frank Corder, was killed.

One year ago: Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs became the fourth major league baseball player to hit 60 home runs in a single season. Lindsay Davenport won the U.S. Open, defeating defending champion Martina Hingis, 6-3, 7-5.
