Hazel Swarts Lind, Wash.
Service for Hazel Lois Swarts, 84, will be at 11 a.m. today at Lind United Methodist Church. Vault burial will follow at Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Lind resident, Miss Swarts died Friday.
She graduated in 1933 from Lind High School and later from Kinman Business University.
Miss Swarts worked as a bookkeeper, secretary and office manager for more than 45 years. She worked at the Adams County Branch of the Washington State University Experiment Station in Lind, the Ritzville Flouring Mills, Sunset Insurance Agency in Spokane and Swarts-Fode Chevrolet in Lind. From 1967 until 1983 she worked for the Union Elevator and Warehouse Co. in Lind.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Ritzville, Lind Girls Club, Lind Senior Center and Lind United Methodist Church.
Miss Swarts moved to Ritzville Life Center in 1996.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Debbie and Lela Swarts, both of Spokane, Wayne Weber of Cheney, Shirley Madison of Othello, Wash., Guyla Wigen of Ritzville, Myra Glick of Lacey, Wash., and Lois Wolff of Granite Falls, Wash.

Hazel Clark Spokane
Service for Hazel K. Clark will be at 2 p.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Clark died Thursday. She was 83.
She graduated from Holy Names High School and received an education degree from Eastern Washington University.
Mrs. Clark, a homemaker, was a foster parent for more than 25 years. She volunteered with Catholic Charities.
Her husband, Stanley Clark, died in 1986.
She is survived by two sons, Neal Clark of Largo, Fla., and Alan Clark of Springfield, Ore.; two daughters, Linda Hefley of Spokane and Lois Free of Rathdrum, Idaho; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Joe Sanders Spokane
Graveside service for Joe A. Sanders, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Oakesdale (Wash.) Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sanders, 83, died Friday.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and served in the Navy during World War II in aviation ordnance in the South Pacific.
Mr. Sanders worked as a manager at the Washington Kennel Club for a few years. He was later an insurance broker in Spokane. He retired in 1978 from Studio K, where he worked as a bartender.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jamie; two sons, Ken Sanders of Spokane and Joe Sanders of Rockford; a daughter, Nancy Staten of Medford, Ore.; a brother, Howard Sanders of Spokane; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Eldon Kinley Spokane
Memorial service for Eldon H. Kinley, 77, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.
A 16-year Spokane resident, Mr. Kinley died Friday. He was born in Sunnyside, Wash.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Kinley was a farmer.
He was a member of the Model T Square Dance Club and the Valley Grange.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two sons, Paul Kinley of Valley, Wash., and Les Kinley of Chewelah, Wash.; a daughter, Diana Feagan of Spokane; a brother, Glenn Kinley of Kent, Wash.; three sisters, Doris Zike of Yakima, Bea Challstrom of Federal Way, Wash., and Jeannie Deller of Issaquah, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Nancy Rockell Spokane
Memorial service for Nancy Rockell, 63, was Monday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Rockwell, who was born in Detroit, died Aug. 31.
She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in English. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Wyvern and Scroll honorary society.
She moved to Spokane in 1969.
After her son, Paul, died from SIDS, she founded the Inland Empire Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation.
She graduated from Gonzaga University Law School in 1985 and worked as a clerk for the U.S. magistrate for a few years. She also worked for the state Attorney General’s Office in Spokane, representing the Department of Social and Health Services and Child Protective Services.
Mrs. Rockwell served on the board of the Children’s Home Society of Washington. She was also a member of the Spokane Medical Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Ed; two sons, Matt and Tim; a daughter, Ann; a brother, Bob; three sisters, Carol, Maureen and Kathy; and a granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Inland Northwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Ralph Sawdy Spokane
Graveside service for Ralph F. Sawdy, 94, will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Seattle, Mr. Sawdy died Saturday.
He moved to Spokane in 1942 and worked as an auto mechanic for 10 years. He later worked as a real estate broker at various Spokane agencies.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
His wife, Muriel, died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Richard Sawdy of Spokane; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Earl `Lucky’ Schulz Spokane
Service for Earl “Lucky” Schulz, 79, will be at 1 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Latah (Wash.) Cemetery.
Mr. Schulz, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Thursday. His family moved to Spokane when he was a child.
He served in the Army during World War II in the European, African and Asian theaters.
Mr. Schulz worked as a laborer at a cement plant.
Survivors include a brother, Ernie Schulz of Otis Orchards.

Daniel Cleveno Spokane
No service will be held for Daniel Frederick Cleveno, 77, at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cleveno, who died Friday, was born in Dusty, Wash.
He was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. He retired in 1984.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Operating Engineers Union Local 370.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Louella; two sons, Dale Sleeman of Renton, Wash., and Robert Cleveno of Portland; three daughters, Carol Sleeman of Spokane, Donna McArthur of Auburn, Wash., and Theresa Couch of Portland; a brother, Ernest Cleveno of Soap Lake, Wash.; a sister, Eleanor Schmick of Shoreline, Wash.; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Audrey (Billow) Hanson Shelton, Wash.
Private gathering for Audrey Emma (Billow) Hanson, will be held. McComb Funeral Home in Shelton is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Canada, Mrs. Hanson died Sept. 6. She was 84.
Mrs. Hanson owned the Knit Knack Shop in Spokane for several years. She was a member of the Downriver Ladies Golf Club in Spokane.
Mrs. Hanson moved to Shelton in 1995.
Her husband of 41 years, Carl Hanson, died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, David Mather Jr. of Bothell, Wash; a daughter, Carol McInelly of Shelton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Elmer Luer Spokane
Memorial service for Elmer E. Luer, 94, is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
A 35-year Spokane resident, Mr. Luer died Thursday. He was born in Ridgeland, Wis.
He graduated from Northwest College Prep School in Watertown, Wis., and later from the University of Montana, with a degree in forestry.
He worked for the Forest Service for 38 years, retiring in 1970 as an information and education officer.
Mr. Luer was active in the Timber Products Bureau. He was a member of the Department of Agriculture Club, Federal Executive Association, Society of American Foresters and Local 16 of the International Order of Hoo-Hoo. He was also a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; a son, Dennis Clute of Spokane; three daughters, Geraldine Luer of Port Orchard, Wash., Patricia Luer of Santa Monica, Calif., and Janice Haltemand of Aurora, Maine; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Hospice of Spokane.
Rodney McDermott Laclede, Idaho
Memorial service for Rodney E. McDermott, 70, will be at 5 p.m. today at the Sandpoint Eagles Lodge. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home in Spokane is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McDermott, who was born in Sunburst, Mont., died Friday.
He graduated in 1949 from Sunburst High School. He worked in oil fields in Montana.
In 1950 he married Frances Belyea. In 1953 he began working for Great Northern Railway in Sweetgrass, Mont. He moved to Sandpoint in 1955 and to Spokane in 1956.
He retired in 1991 from Burlington Northern Railroad and moved to Laclede in 1994.
Mr. McDermott was a member of the Sandpoint Eagle’s Lodge.
Survivors include four sons, James and Anthony McDermott, both of Spokane, Timothy McDermott of Oldtown, Idaho, and Clinton Belyea of Conner, Mont.; four daughters, Judith Stroyan, Mary McDermott and Ethel Smith, all of Spokane, and Patricia Lindsay of Pierce, Idaho; two brothers, Wayne and Jim McDermott, both of Sandpoint; a sister, June Dolezal of Chester, Mont.; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Virginia Harrison Coeur d’Alene
Funeral Mass for Virginia Elizabeth Harrison, 80, will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harrison, who was born in Scranton, Pa., died Friday.
She grew up in Scranton and graduated from nursing school in Philadelphia. She received a commission with the Navy and served for three years during World War II.
She later lived in California and worked as a nurse until moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1965. In Coeur d’Alene she worked for Kootenai Medical Center. Mrs. Harrison later worked at Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d’Alene before retiring in 1970.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
Her husband of 50 years, Daniel, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Mark Harrison of Elko, Nev.; three daughters, Cathy Bruce of Hayden, Idaho, Patricia Henderson of Wasilla, Alaska, and Peggy Larsen of Spokane; a sister, Clara Strowe of Florida; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Harlan Steffensen Post Falls
Memorial service for Harlan D. Steffensen, 53, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Steffensen, who was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, died Friday.
He lived in Loveland, Colo., before moving to Post Falls in 1991. He operated a chop saw for Inland Wood Specialists in Spokane.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; three sons, Larry, Jerry and Chad Steffensen, all of Minnesota; a daughter, Robin Hunt of Spokane; his parents, Cecil and Ruth Steffensen of Buffalo Center; two sisters, Janet and Gail; four brothers, Darwin, Neal, Wayne and Denny; and four grandchildren.
