Jonathan Byler Daniel Byler

Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Jonathan Byler, 36, and Daniel Byler, 33, was Wednesday at Kootenai Valley Mennonite Church in Bonners Ferry.

The brothers died Saturday in a plane crash near Naples.

Jonathan was born in Cleveland, Ohio.

He worked as a carpenter in Seymour, Mo., and married Jean Hofer in 1983. In 1990 he moved to Bonners Ferry.

Daniel was born in Warren, Ohio.

He married Donna Champ in 1988 and worked in construction in Maryland until moving to Bonners Ferry in 1991. He was a Mennonite and a pilot with ambitions to become active in mission aviation.

With their brother, David, they owned Caribou Creek Log Homes.

Jonathan is survived by his wife, Jean; and four children, Jeremy, Justin, Jody, and Jeana, all at home.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Donna; and three children, Valeria, Amanda and Matthew, all at home.

They are both survived by their parents, Rudy and Esther Byler of Bonners Ferry; and a brother, David Byler, and four sisters, Debbie Helmuth, Judy Skrivseth, Rachel Oxley and Joanna Byler, all of Bonners Ferry; and grandparents, Dan and Martha Miller of Seymour, Mo., and Dan Byler of Bonners Ferry.

Frances Ferguson Roseburg, Ore.

Graveside service for Frances Evelyn (Engstrom) Ferguson, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ferguson, who was born in Princeton, Minn., died Thursday. Her family moved to St. Maries when she was a teenager.

During World War II she worked in an airplane parts factory.

She married George Plante and lived in Spokane for 42 years. He died after 48 years of marriage.

Mrs. Ferguson worked as a cook at various hospitals.

She moved to Roseburg in 1986 and married John Ferguson.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry Ferguson of Harrisburg, Ore., and Sam Ferguson of Winston, Ore.; three daughters, Delores Pelley of Spokane, Barbara Pierone of Yakima and Darlene Spencer of Springfield, Ore.; a brother, Mayford Engstrom, and a sister, Violet Thompson, both of Rockford, Ill.; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Charles Reagan Spokane

Memorial service for Charles K. Reagan, 85, will be at 1 p.m. today at North Hill Christian Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reagan, who died Sunday, was a 50-year Spokane resident.

He was born in Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Michigan.

He worked as a health consultant for the Department of Social and Health Services.

Mr. Reagan was a member of North Hill Christian Church.

His wife, Harriet died last July Survivors include a son, Ronald Reagan of Tarzana, Calif.; and a sister, Jane Reagan of LaMirada, Calif.

Don Spangle Spokane

Memorial service for Don R. Spangle, a lifetime Spokane resident, is planned for 4 p.m. Monday at Gretna Green Chapel. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spangle died Sept. 1. He was 66.

He graduated from Rogers High School and served in the Air Force from 1949 until 1952. He later served in the Coast Guard for a few years.

He worked as a firefighter for the Spokane Fire Department and retired in 1986.

Mr. Spangle was a member of Fire Fighters Union Local 29, where he served as president, district representative and parliamentarian.

His wife, Alice, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Mark Spangle of Spokane; three daughters, Janet Spangle of Spokane, Peggy Sequin of Richland and Deborah Spangle York of Seattle; a sister, Joyce Shay of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arc of Spokane.

Herbert Hudson Post Falls

No service will be held for Herbert William Hudson, 84, at his request. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hudson, who was born in Sheridan, Mont., died Wednesday.

He grew up in Dayton, Wash., and in 1939 he married Eunice Cook. They lived in the Spokane Valley and moved to Post Falls in 1947.

Mr. Hudson worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Mead for 31 years and retired in 1977.

He was a member of the Nazarene Church and the National Rifle Association. He also participated in fly tying with the North Idaho Fly Casters.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Hudson of Pennsylvania and James Hudson of Post Falls; three daughters, Thelma Larsen of Colorado, Celia Peterson of Coeur d’Alene and Suzanne Durbin of Twin Lakes, Idaho; two brothers, Chester Hudson of California and David Hudson of Oregon; two sisters, Phyllis Rose of Kennewick and Ethel Bailey of Centralia, Wash.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Fern O’Toole Sandpoint

No service will be held for Fern O’Toole, 82, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. O’Toole, who was born in Fernwood, Idaho, died Tuesday. She grew up in the Wolf Lodge area near Coeur d’Alene and later moved to St. Maries and was a homemaker.

Mrs. O’Toole moved to Sandpoint three years ago and was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russ O’Toole. Survivors include a sister, Florence Stickney of Coeur d’Alene; and several nieces and nephews.

Nancy Rockwell Spokane

Memorial service for Nancy Rockwell, 63, was Monday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Rockwell, who was born in Detroit, died Aug. 31.

She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in English. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Wyvern and Scroll honor society.

She moved to Spokane in 1969.

After her son, Paul, died from SIDS she founded the Inland Empire Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation.

She graduated from Gonzaga University Law School in 1985 and worked as a clerk for the U.S. magistrate for a few years. She also worked for the state Attorney General’s Office in Spokane, representing the Department of Social and Health Services and Child Protective Services.

Mrs. Rockwell served on the board of the Children’s Home Society of Washington. She was also a member of the Spokane Medical Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Ed; two sons, Matt and Tim Rockwell; a daughter, Ann; a brother, Bob; three sisters, Carol, Maureen and Kathy; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Inland Northwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Verne Doolin Spokane

No services will be held for Verne R. Doolin, 92. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Doolin, who was born in Missouri, died Friday.

He moved to Spokane in 1945 and worked as a mechanical equipment operator at Kaiser Aluminum for several years.

His wife preceded him in death Mr. Doolin is survived by two daughters, Janice Danielson and Linda Troxel.

John Keller Spokane No service will be held for John Walter Keller at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Keller died Thursday. He was 54. He owned JK Software for many years.

Survivors include a son, John Keller; two daughters, Kami and Kelli Keller; his mother, Ruth Keller; a brother, Jerry Keller; a sister, Carol Fuller; and three grandchildren.

Dale Schultz Sublimity, Ore.

Memorial service for A. Dale Schultz, 86, will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Spokane. Private inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Restlawn Funeral Home in Salem, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schultz, who was born in Marlin, Wash., died Sunday.

He graduated from Valley (Wash.) High School.

Mr. Schultz worked on the Grand Coulee Dam with the Bureau of Reclamation for six years. He later worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for several years, making topological maps. He retired in 1973 as a topographical engineer in Menlo Park, Calif.

Mr. Schultz moved to Spokane in 1973 and recently moved to Sublimity.

He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Florice; two daughters, Sandra Onslot of Turner, Ore., and Carol Schultz of Menlo Park; two sisters, Valdene Morgan of Deer Lake, Wash., and Alice Ewing of Sandpoint; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Gordon Hodgson Medical Lake

Service for Gordon G. Hodgson will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hodgson, 85, died Sunday.

He was born in Tensed, Idaho, and moved to Spokane as a child. He farmed in the Spangle and Plaza, Wash., area for many years.

He moved to Medical Lake in 1947 and continued to farm.

Mr. Hodgson was a member of Espanola Grange 698.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Anna; four sons, Larry, Lyle, Keith and Wayne Hodgson, all of Medical Lake; a daughter, Shirley Meserve of Thornton, Wash.; two brothers, Wilbur Hodgson of Veradale and Tim Hodgson of Spangle; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gilbert Mills Greenacres

Memorial service for Gilbert Cooper `Gil’ Mills, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Opportunity Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 46-year Spokane resident, Mr. Mills died Sunday. He was born in Ellensburg.

Mr. Mills was superintendent of the Central Valley School District from 1953 to 1973. Under his leadership, Central Valley grew from a district with seven schools and 2,000 students to 16 schools and more than 10,000 students.

Mr. Mills graduated from Ellensburg Normal School and earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington.

He taught school, coached baseball and refereed football games in Aberdeen, Wash., for a few years. He then served as a vice principal in Enumclaw, Wash.

From 1946 to 1953 he was the principal and superintendent of the Marysville (Wash.) School District.

He was a member of Opportunity Presbyterian Church.

His wife of 56 years, Eileen, died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Kerbel of Redmond, Wash., and Barbara Rathbun of Arvada, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Mary Calais Veradale

Funeral Mass for Mary A. Calais, 58, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Calais, who died Tuesday, was born in .

She was a 13-year Spokane resident and worked for 12 years as a special education teacher.

Mrs. Calais was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, John; two sons, John Calais III of Veradale and Keith Calais of Bothell, Wash.; a daughter, Stephanie Noble of Veradale; three brothers, Edward, Terrance and Gilbert Rieth, all of New Orleans; and two grandchildren.
