Ty Johnson Will Speak At Science Forum

Ty Johnson, 16, of Laclede, has been invited to speak at a student science forum in Chicago sponsored by the Indo-American center. The upcoming forum will feature the biographer of university of Chicago astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, after whom the new NASA X-ray observatory is named. Johnson won a contest to help name the telescope, which was launched into space in July.

Michael M. Forbes, son of Lonnie and Lexie Forbes of Moscow, and Joshua E. Beisel, son of retired Air Force Col. James and Diana Beisel of Moscow, recently graduated from Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma.

The cadets, both students at the University of Idaho, received leadership training and evaluation exercises in communications, survival, and management.

They will receive commissions as second lieutenants to serve in the Army, National Guard or Army Reserve after college graduation.

Army Cadet Darren M. Zychek, son of Robert and Lucy Zychek of Post Falls, recently was named to the dean’s list at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Zychek, a 1996 graduate of Lakeland High School, plans to graduate in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree and is currently studying business management and systems engineering. He will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army following his graduation.

David T. King, who lives in Coeur d’Alene with his wife, Leah, has enlisted in the Army’s delayed entry program as a combat engineer.

King recently departed for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Mathew K. Maloney, son of Kathryn Maloney of Coeur d’Alene, and Mathew Maloney of Washington State, has enlisted in the Army’s delayed entry program as a chemical operations specialist and will attend basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Maloney is a 1997 graduate of North Idaho College.
