Adams County Othello
Local officials fear if voters approve Initiative 695 in November to roll back state motor vehicle taxes, an overpass to eliminate the traffic hazard known as “Killer Corner” will not be built. The intersection of Highways 17 and 26 is considered one of the most dangerous in the state.
Ferry County Curlew
County Democrats are invited to the annual fall picnic Sunday at 1 p.m. at the McKay Ranch at 259 Boulder Creek Road. Possible congressional candidate Wayne Brokaw is slated to speak, as is Spokane County Commissioner John Roskelley. Cost of the picnic is $10 for a menu of ribs, corn on the cob, salad and dessert.
Grant County Moses Lake
Genie Industries, makers of industrial lifts, has begun hiring for nearly 250 positions in its plant at the Port of Moses Lake. The company, based in Redmond, will eventually hire as many as 450 people.
Lincoln County Almira
The annual Almira Country Fair is just one week away, starting Sept. 25. Food and craft vendors will inhabit the community center, with local quilters holding their bee at the Lutheran Church. There will be a game center for kids, and soap box derby races.
Pend Oreille County Ione
A group has been formed to coordinate a series of projects aimed at fixing up the town. The Ione “Vitalization” Project is looking for volunteers to help with ongoing community projects.
Spokane County Spokane
The Spokane Arts Commission will kick off the Spokane Visual Arts Tour Oct. 1 from 5 to 9 p.m., when more than 31 participating locations will extend their viewing hours to celebrate the visual arts. There will be artist receptions and live music throughout downtown.
Stevens County Colville
The Stevens County Youth and Family Network needs help with its two-year plan. The public is invited to give input Wednesday at the Chewelah City Hall at E. 310 Clay St. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. All feedback and suggestions will be welcome as the group plans for 2000-2001.
Whitman County Pullman
Jane Lawrence, director of Washington State University’s Honors College, announced this week she has accepted a position as vice provost for undergraduate education at the University of Vermont. She plans to leave WSU at the end of the fall semester. During Lawrence’s five years at WSU, the Honors College was ranked one of the top eight honors programs in the U.S. by Money magazine.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
A St. Maries couple was arrested Sept. 2 and charged with manufacturing a controlled substance and possession of stolen property after Benewah County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at the couple’s home. Paul M. Huseth and Charlinda S. Wade are being held at the Benewah County Jail.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Work to repair the Dover Bridge on U.S. Highway 2 east of Sandpoint will begin on Sept. 27. According to the Idaho Transportation Department, work is being done at night to minimize impact on motorists. The bridge will be closed to all traffic from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sept. 27-30. The Transportation Department and the contractor are working with emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies to provide alternate routes during closure.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Boundary County commissioners are seeking to fill a vacant seat on the Planning and Zoning Commission. This commission meets the third Thursday of the month to decide on various land use and planning issues. Those interested must have lived in Boundary County for a minimum of two years and must submit a letter of interest to the zoning administrator at P.O. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Nominations for the 1999 Distinguished Citizen Award are being accepted by the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. Nomination letters and information packets regarding the nominee may include newspaper columns, additional support letters and any other published material. The deadline is Oct. 15. Latah County Princeton
The University of Idaho Experimental Forest and Extension Forestry presents a small-scale forestry equipment demonstration and forestry field day Oct. 2 in Princeton. Demonstrations will continue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information tables will include forest health issues, special forest products and reforestation. A $5 registration fee includes resource materials. Shoshone County Kellogg M
The Kellogg School District Board has approved a plan to have Kellogg Police Sgt. Pete Wood as a school resource officer. Wood will be in the school district part time this year, and a grant will be sought to allow him to be full time next year. There is no cost to the school district.

Lincoln County Libby
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will begin the Sunday School year with a carnival at 11 a.m. Sunday. Parents can review the curriculum, meet teachers and register their children. Classes will be available for preschool/kindergarten ages 3-5, primary ages 6-8, and intermediate ages 9-11. Classes begin 10 a.m. Sept. 26 at the church on 109 W. Poplar.
