Heisman watch, multiple options
Through three games, Florida State receiver Peter Warrick hasn’t had the type of stats that will keep him in the Heisman race, plus the better he does on offense, the better QB Chris Weinke, another Heisman candidate will do. Warrick caught nine passes for 75 yards and returned two punts for 46 yards Saturday against North Carolina State.
Southern Cal’s R. Jay Soward, too, has yet to develop the all-purpose stats that would keep him in the chase.
As long as Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington has the assignment of rushing the punter and blocking him on the return, he’s going to drop from the Heisman race. Yes, he had an interception and a game-saving block of a field goal last week, but those little punters keep getting him into trouble. Saturday, for the second consecutive week, he drew a personal foul roughing up the punter on his blocking assignment. It’s not the type of conduct that wins votes.
Villanova’s versatile Brian Westbrook would be a great Division I-AA candidate but injuries have kept him on the sidelines.
Heisman Trivia: Which two high school or prep schools have produced more than one Heisman Trophy winner?
As if 1-3 weren’t bad enough
Notre Dame has reported three possible rules violations to the NCAA, including one in which a part-time tutor wrote a paper for a student-athlete.
The athlete no longer is at Notre Dame and the tutor was fired, the school said in a statement Friday. The university’s statement also disclosed a student-athlete’s alleged misuse of complimentary tickets and an allegation that a student-athlete received extra benefits.
The identities of the individuals involved were not disclosed by school officials.
Notre Dame’s statement came just days after senior quarterback Eric Chappell, who was dropped from the team for “internal team discipline,” was reported to have been involved in both the ticket and extra benefits cases.
Break up the Terps
Maryland is 3-0 for the first time since 1995.
Coach Ron Vanderlinden’s teams were 5-17 in his first two years and Maryland’s last seven victories, including the first two this season, were against Temple (three times), Duke (twice), James Madison and Western Carolina.
Bad News Bears
Baylor lost its opener to Boston College on a missed extra point in overtime, and last week saw UNLV return a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown on the game’s final play, when all the Bears had to do was take a knee to preserve a victory.
No such dramatics were in store Saturday. Oklahoma routed Baylor 41-10.
Rushing records
Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne passed Archie Griffin to become the Big Ten’s career rushing leader with 5,615 yards, including bowl games. Dayne carried 28 times for 231 yards to move into sixth place on the NCAA career rushing list, which does not include bowl games.
Surprise ending
Yale’s Ben Blake blocked an extra point attempt with 14 seconds remaining, only to watch Brown’s Rob Scholl run the ball into the end zone for two points to give the Bears a 25-24 victory over the Bulldogs.
They can run, they can pass, they can score

Indiana’s Antwaan Randle El ran for three TDs and passed for one in the Hoosiers’ loss to Kentucky. He passed for 201 yards and rushed for 115.
