Adams County

Othello

Gas prices in Othello raised a few eyebrows. Motorists paid a dime more for a gallon in August than the previous month. The August price of $1.26 is the highest summer closing price on record. In 1998, gas cost $1.08 per gallon, and in 1995, the price was $1.18.

Ferry County

Republic

Republic has been selected as one of six model arts communities in the Northwest by the National Endowment for the Arts. Republic is part of the “Spirit of the Northwest” project, and is eligible for grant funds. The town was chosen because of its growing performance programming, the town murals and architecture, and the quality reputation of local artists.

Grant County

Moses Lake

Former Moses Lake High School baseball standout B.J. Garbe was named a first-team All-American and District 8 Player of the Year by the Baseball Coaches of America. Teammates Jason Cooper and Ryan Doumit were recognized as second-team All-Americans and earned spots on the All-District 8 team. Doumit and Garbe both signed pro contracts, while Cooper will attend Stanford on a scholarship.

Odessa

The first sewer hookup in Odessa will be made tomorrow, according to Wyatt Engineering. Installation of an 8-inch sewer main in the east center and north sections of town is nearly complete. The southwest corner of town is finished.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Corie Isaacson is the new head coach of the NHS Grizzly volleyball team. Isaacson begins the season with few seasoned varsity players. She said younger players may have an easier time with changes in the offense.

Spokane County

Spokane

The local chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will host a conference Friday and Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel in the Valley. The featured speaker will be Memphis Police Lt. Sam Cockran, who talk about his department’s Crisis Intervention Team. NAMI is a grass-roots organization that promotes support for families whose members have a mental illness.

Stevens County

Colville

Mount Carmel Hospital is hosting “Date With the Doctor,” an information session and lecture on sleep facts and myths Monday at 6:30 p.m. The forum will be held in the Rendezvous Theater at the community college. Dr. Ramon Canto will speak on insomnia, snoring and apnea, rapid eye movement disorders, dreams and nightmares.

Pullman

The Pullman School District is proposing $19.3 million in facility improvements to rebuild Lincoln Middle School and remodel the high school. The district hopes to have a facilities improvement levy package before voters in November. Public meetings are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Franklin Elementary, Sept. 29 at Pullman High School, Oct. 6 at Jefferson Elementary, Oct. 7 at Albion City Hall, Oct. 8 at the Ewartsville Grange, Oct. 11 at Sunnyside Elementary and Oct. 20 at the lower library at Pullman High School.

St. Maries

Thursday is the deadline to file nomination petitions for the Nov. 2 election. Positions are open in St. Maries, Harrison and Plummer. Write-in candidates have until Oct. 19 to file.

Bonner County

Priest River

The Priest River City Council is considering entering into a mutual aid law enforcement agreement with Newport and Pend Oreille County. The agreement would give the Priest River Police Department authority to act outside its Idaho jurisdiction in Washington to give assistance as requested. Newport and Pend Oreille County would have the same authority in Idaho. The Priest River City Council voted to enter into the agreement as long as it is approved by the city attorney.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

The University of Idaho Boundary County Extension Office will sponsor “Managing Birch in Inland Northwest Forests,” a program for landowners and foresters, on Friday. The program begins at 8 a.m. at the extension office and will feature a field trip. Topics include the birch’s role in North Idaho forest ecology, birch silviculture, integrating birch with native conifer production, current birch markets and developing stronger markets for Idaho birch. Coeur d’Alene

Current government issues affecting North Idaho will be the topic of a public forum presented by the Kootenai County Republican Women on Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Speakers include Shirley Hindley, executive officer of the Coeur d’Alene Board of Realtors, Shirley Caddel of Friends of the Aquifer, and Susan Matthews, District Ranger of the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District. The Moscow Arts Commission is featuring Spokane artist Shani Marchant and Lewiston artist Madlynn Kirkland through Sept. 30 at the Third Street Gallery. Marchant is displaying watercolor and oil works, and Kirkland is displaying watercolor works. The gallery is located in Moscow City Hall.

The state Board of Education is accepting feedback on the latest version of exiting standards. The board approved temporary rules for standards earlier this year. Public high school seniors must meet the requirements before graduating. Libby

Libby Dam will participate in the sixth annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday. Volunteers will work with the staff at the dam on improvements including planting native trees, shrubs and flowers in the public recreation areas.
