It’s cold and flu season again, particularly with school back in session. The Adams County Health District will begin offering flu vaccinations on Oct. 5, with flu shots also being given on following Tuesdays. Anyone over the age of 6 months can be given the vaccine, which protects against A/Beijing, A/Sydney and B/Harbin strains of influenza.

Residents wanting to chop wood for what many believe will be a long and bitter winter should get their permits early. The Republic ranger district of the U.S. Forest Service will sell firewood permits on Saturday mornings until the end of October when the first snowfalls are expected. Maps also will be available.

Last-minute items still are being accepted for the annual Chamber of Commerce yard sale. The sale, scheduled for Friday and Saturday on the Rosman property across U.S. Highway 2 from Sandy’s Food City, will pay the bills for the town’s planned Y2K millennium/New Year’s Eve party.

If you’re planning to get your General Educational Development (GED) degree, today is the day to start. The Newport College Center will begin its GED courses today with classes from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Classes will run Mondays through Thursdays, and enrollment is open with new students being accepted at any time. An upcoming exhibition at the Chase Gallery in City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., will explore different points of view about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. The exhibit will run through October as part of the Visual Arts Tour and the Asian Cultural Festival.

Stevens County

Echo Estates

Residents of Echo Estates are hoping to rehabilitate their sewer system. State grants and loans totaling more than $219,900 have been awarded to Public Utility District No. 1 to repair the system. Homeowners have been dealing with sewage problems since April 1996.

Paving on state Highway 3 between Ed’s R&R and Reid’s Corner will begin soon.

Northbound traffic will be rerouted along the Meadowhurst detour road. Weather permitting, the $4 million project should be completed by October.

The Panhandle Basin Advisory Group will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Edgewater Resort to inform the public and receive comments on the Pend Oreille bull trout plan. Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene Recreation Department will begin youth basketball registration on Oct. 4. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the office, 221 S. Fifth. The program, which costs $25 for city residents and $30 for nonresidents, is open to boys and girls in the fourth through ninth grades. Games will begin in November and run through February.

The Antiques and Collectibles Fair is slated Oct. 2 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eastside Marketplace at the junction of Blaine Street and the Troy highway in Moscow. Local experts will talk with residents about items of interest and make appraisals. Ruby Valentine, Gudrun Aurun, Arlene Jonas and Joann Jones will be on hand to answer questions about manuscripts, books, textiles and quilts as well as basic conservation techniques and supplies. Admission will be $5 for adults, which includes the appraisal of one item. Two appraisals will cost $9, three will be $12 and each additional one will be $3. The annual Girl Scouts roundup and parent information night will be held Sept. 28 at the UCC Congregational Church in Wallace. Libby

A U.S. Senate appropriations subcommittee approved $900,000 last week for the effort to build a cultural arts center in Libby. U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., is on the subcommittee. The Kootenai Heritage Council is proposing to build a 350- to 600-seat auditorium and cafeteria adjacent to Libby High School at an estimated cost of nearly $6 million. The appropriations bill included $21.5 million for Montana projects.
