‘Parents On Board’ Program Offered At Arcadia School Course Is Available To Anyone; Attendance Is Limited To 30
Parents looking for ways to help their children be more successful in school need look no further.
Arcadia Elementary is once again offering its four-part “Parents on Board” program Oct. 5, 7, 12 and 14 from 6-7:30 p.m.
The program is open to anyone, though preference will be given to Deer Park School District parents. Attendance is limited to 30.
The program, taught by Arcadia’s social worker, Catherine Oviatt, focuses on ways parents can help their children get better grades and test scores, do more homework, be more involved in extracurricular activities, demonstrate a more positive attitude and be more likely to continue their education after high school.
In the two years the district has been offering the program, Oviatt said she’s been astounded by the response.
“I have a hard time getting (parents) out the door at the end of the night,” Oviatt said. “It’s a fun program.”
Oviatt teaches the course three times a year. The next sessions will be in January and in April.

Deer Park sets up absentee hotline
Deer Park School District has set up a districtwide 24-hour absentee call-in line. Parents of students at Deer Park Elementary School, Arcadia Elementary School, Deer Park Middle School and Deer Park High School are urged to call 276-8051 at any time to report their child’s absence on a school day.
Kudos to Mt. Spokane students
Last May, 31 Mt. Spokane High School seniors took the Advanced Placement U.S. History examination. Thirty received passing scores - 3 or above on a 5-point scale - which earns them semester or quarter credits at the college or university to which they are accepted.
Top scores of 5 were earned by Adam Ferguson, Emily Haxton, Brett Johnson, Justin Lewis, Lars Olson, Nichole Pettis and Jacob Swanson.
The AP U.S. History class is taught by Greg Schultz.

Wilson Elementary is hosting an open house Sept. 30 to show off the summer construction project that neighbors and parents are calling spectacular.
The school will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. with a dedication ceremony at 5:15 p.m. Spokane School District 81 board Chairman Rocco Treppiedi and Superintendent Gary Livingston will be on hand to help commemorate the occasion with Principal Janet Gores.
The $1.3 million project added a new wing, which replaced the old annex, and a new library that doubled the size of the old one.
In particular, the wing was designed to match exactly the delicate terra cotta patterns of the main building.
Wilson Elementary won praise from the Eastern Washington State Historical Society, which commended the school in a letter for the “careful attention to detail.”
School safety workshop
Spokane School District 81 will host a school safety workshop for parents of teens Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Libby Center, 2900 E. First. The school safety panel will discuss and answer questions about what parents can do to help keep kids safe.
