Frostad, EV Repeat However, Winning Runner’S Twin Passes Out

Melanie Frostad of East Valley breezed to a second straight title in the Farragut Invitational cross country meet Saturday afternoon, winning by more than a minute.

No surprise. What was unusual, though, was that her twin sister, Melissa, who finished runner-up last year, wasn’t pushing Melanie at the finish line.

The Frostads led the A race comfortably through 2 miles when Melissa collapsed and passed out after climbing the course’s infamous “goat hill” - a steep 150-meter dirt path that forces many runners to nearly crawl.

“We were about 100 meters past goat hill and she was right behind me,” Melanie said. “Then I heard this loud `thunk.’ I couldn’t stop and say `Are you OK?’ I just had to keep going.”

Melissa Frostad didn’t finish. She was carried to the staging area, where she was beginning to regain her strength about 30 minutes after the race concluded.

“She was fine during (warmups),” said Melanie, who finished in a time of 19 minutes, 47.72 seconds on the hilly, 3.1-mile course. “She’s going to be fine, but we don’t know what happened.”

As the Frostads approached goat hill, Melanie realized somebody had to take the lead because runners can’t negotiate the hill side by side.

That’s when she attacked the hill.

“We don’t try to beat each other,” Melanie said. “Whoever wins wins.”

East Valley showed its depth by capturing its third consecutive A team title and fourth in the last five years.

The Knights finished with 63 points, topping runner-up Capital of Boise (80). Colville (112) took third and Lake City (122) was the highest-finishing North Idaho team as it edged Post Falls (129).

Jessie Doty of Capital took second place individually (20:48.24), Jenny Liou of Moscow (20:56) was the top Panhandle finisher in third, and Colville’s Crystal Evans was fourth (21:10.6).

In the A boys race, Colville’s Cory Rebmann (16:56.25) ran away from the field.

Following Rebmann were the Cheney duo of Kevin Mahoney (17:39.09) and Andy Davis (17:40.08).

Gonzaga Prep used a tight pack to capture the A boys title. The Bullpups, led by the fourth- and fifth-place finishes of Matt Turner (17:43.76) and Geoff Arte (17:45.46), placed five in the top 21. They finished with 56 points.

It was a refreshing victory over G-Prep after it was clobbered by Greater Spokane League powers Mead, University and Mt. Spokane in a meet Wednesday.

The Bullpups won without top runner John Ulmen, who’s recovering from an injury.

“It’s a great way to bounce back after getting beat by the class of the state,” G-Prep coach Tony Maucione said. “It was a good pick-me-up.”

Cheney took second (76) and Colville was third (91). Coeur d’Alene was sixth (147), the highest placing by a Panhandle team.

Riverside’s boys and girls, meanwhile, ruled the B races. The Rams boys - who finished second, fourth, fifth, eighth and 12th - posted 31 points to top Lakeside of Nine Mile (54). Bonners Ferry took third (99).

The Rams girls - as impressive as the boys with five runners in the top 10 - had 30 points.

Chewelah was next with 59 and Newport took third (68).

Bonners Ferry sophomore Forest Braden sprinted to the B boys title, finishing in 16:53.47.

Braden caught runner-up Jesse Klemish of Springdale just before the final 600 meters, a speedy descent to the finish.

Laura Halverson of Freeman, relatively unchallenged, won the B girls race. She finished in 20:52.4, about 43 seconds ahead of Katie Prichard of Riverside.

Girls soccer

Kaitlin Mitchell scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on the first goal in Lake City’s 2-1 win at Cheney. LC is 7-0-1, 4-0 Border League… . Also in the league, Julie Jacobson set up the first goal and scored the second, and Sandpoint scored four second-half goals with the wind at its back for a 4-1 win at Lewiston.

Sara Sheridan scored five times, giving her nine goals in the last two matches, and Pullman registered a 9-0 win at Chewelah. The Greyhounds are 3-0 in the Great Northern League, just ahead of Riverside (2-0).

Cross country

North Central placed three runners in the top nine in winning the girls title at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula. Katie Whittaker finished the 3.3-mile course in 19:19 for seventh place to lead NC.

University’s boys ran 1-4, with Max Schmidt as champion, to win the Curtis Invitational in Tacoma. Champion Erin Decasy led Gig Harbor to the girls title. U-Hi finished second, led by fourth-place Michelle Pierce.

Football

Pateros (2-1, 2-0) defeated Cusick 28-6 in a Northeast B-8 game at Pateros. Jake Sattleen rushed for 169 yards for Cusick (2-1, 1-1).

Riverside triumphs Riverside scored the final four points of its Great Northern League match to defeat Newport Saturday for its first league win in four seasons. Riverside jumped to an 11-4 lead in the fifth game, then held off a rally by the host Grizzlies. The match ended 14-16, 15-7, 15-4, 14-16, 15-10. Riverside (1-2 GNL) hadn’t won a league match since it played in the Northeast A in ‘95. Also in the GNL, Pullman improved to 5-0 with a 15-9, 16-14, 5-15, 14-16, 15-9 win over visiting Medical Lake. Pullman’s Amy Chamberlain totaled 15 kills, 28 assists and five aces. Pullman plays at Lakeside (3-0) Tuesday. Ellen Shaw had two aces to end the first game and three to finish the match, and Colville swept visiting Post Falls 3-0 in the Border League. Colville led the first game 10-4, but needed to hold off the Trojans, 18-16. PF couldn’t hold a 6-3 third-game lead… . Elsewhere in the league, visiting Cheney (2-2) outlasted Coeur d’Alene 13-15, 15-11, 5-15, 15-11, 15-2. CdA player Casey Anderson was taken to the hospital after an allergic reaction. Deanne Graesser served 13 points and had six digs in the first game, and North Central swept visiting Central Valley 3-0 in a non-leaguer.
