Adams County Othello

Tiffany Phillips, an Othello High junior, was recently crowned as Othello’s Junior Miss. She received $800 in scholarships and the right to represent the community at local and regional events throughout the year. Joining her on the community float will be runners-up Michelle DeLeon and Lisa Miller. Their first parade experience will come at the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival in May.

Ferry County Republic

It’s time for a little spring cleaning at the local Car & Truck Museum. Folks here will be showing up with brooms, rags and tools to spruce things up in time for the annual open house. Those helping will be treated to a potluck luncheon. The work starts Sunday at 10 a.m.

Grant County Ephrata

Darrell Grant Monday, 35, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for consuming beer, cigarettes and chewing tobacco on Dec. 8, 1999, after John’s Foods had closed for the evening. Monday tripped several intruder alarms and was found in the basement. He will also pay more than $1,000 in restitution and fines. Monday has prior felony convictions.

Lincoln County Odessa

Local residents are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Odessa Memorial Hospital today. Originally named Veterans Memorial Hospital, the doors were opened April 1, 1950, with a crowd of 1,000 braving a windstorm. Festivities begin at 2 p.m. with tours of the hospital and the rooftop heliport.

Pend Oreille County Diamond Lake

Divers will soon be prowling the bottom of Diamond Lake looking for Milfoil. A special aquatic herbicide called Navigate was used last summer to kill the noxious water weed that threatened to choke the waterway. Folks around the lake are also interested in a special “weed vacuum dredger” being used at Spirit Lake. The vacuum is reportedly working well.

Spokane County Spokane

Two Spokane-area high school teams finished in the top 10 in the state YMCA High School Mock Trial finals held at the Supreme Court in Olympia on March 25. Of the 22 teams competing, Gonzaga Prep finished seventh and Central Valley 10th.

Stevens County Northport

Local residents are trying to raise money for a medical clinic here by asking people to purchase an inscribed brick for $100. The brick will be used in the structure.

Whitman County Pullman

A Tacoma construction worker was arrested Thursday night for brandishing a 4-inch serrated knife and threatening a bouncer at Valhalla, a tavern near campus in Pullman. Officers arrested the man trying to enter a nearby residence after being ejected from the bar. He told police he was in Pullman to work on a construction project at Washington State University.

IDAHO

Benewah County Plummer

Pete and Peggy Mahoney will open two new business additions, the Warpath One Stop and the Pemmican Inn Cafe, to their existing Warpath Smokeshop on April 17. Prizes will be given away all day to celebrate the event.

Bonner County Sandpoint

“Glory Days of Riverboats” will be narrated by Faith McClenny during the annual Bonner County Historical Society’s meeting at noon today at the Powerhouse Bar and Grill. Trustees will be elected and a no-host lunch will be served. Everyone is welcome. Society membership is $15, seniors $8.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Robert Graham, resident, was unanimously approved by the Senate Resource and Environment Committee for reappointment to the eight-member Idaho Water Resource Board. Graham’s reappointment will be final if approved by the Senate. The new term would end Jan. 1, 2003.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The North Idaho College Workforce Training Center will offer two new technical skill classes April 10 at the center in Post Falls. Advanced AutoCAD will be held 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through May 4. Cost is $185. Solid State Electronics will be held 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through April 26. Latah County Moscow

Sergei Khrushchev, son of the late Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, will lecture at the University of Idaho at 7 p.m. Thursday in the College of Law Courtroom. The lecture, titled “The Russian Road to Capitalism,” will cover economic and political issues facing the Soviet Union. The event is co-sponsored by the Martin Institute for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution and the Borah Foundation.

Shoshone County Kellogg

A public meeting will be held tonight regarding the rails-to-trails project from Plummer to Mullan. The meeting begins at 6:30 at Canyon Elementary School, near Cataldo, and will include representatives from federal and state agencies, as well as the Coeur d’Alene Indian tribe.
