Through The Wall
Karl-Heinz Juergens remembers Nov. 9, 1989, the jubilant night he walked through Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate as the Berlin Wall fell. Now he can drive through in style, in the car the late East German leader Erich Honecker rode in. Juergens was the winning bidder Saturday at an auction of Honecker’s 1978 Citroen CX 2300 Prestige. Though some doubt the car’s reported history, Juergens said he’s happy the $10,000 he paid will benefit sick children. Communist kitsch has a new trendiness as people forget about the darker side of the totalitarian regime. Juergens, a former East German, hopes to give the car to a museum so that younger generations don’t forget their history. The car, which isn’t armored, recently hit 125 mph on the autobahn and has just 28,673 miles on the odometer.
