Vikings Hit Two Lucky Sevens

Coeur d’Alene specialized in seven-run innings while sweeping a Border League baseball doubleheader at Sandpoint on Saturday.

Joe Morelli’s two-run triple capped a seven-run sixth inning, giving the Vikings (5-1) a 7-6 win in the opener.

Nate Church’s two-run double highlighted a seven-run first in the second game, a 7-0 win.

CdA’s Jason Coleman went 3 for 4 in the opener. Reliever Matt Brown struck out the final two batters of the game, leaving the bases loaded for the Bulldogs (1-7).

Blake Whiteman went 3 for 4 and Robert Green had a two-run single in the second game for the Vikings.

Also in the league, Trent Baysinger struck out 10 in the opener and Adam Busch fanned 11 in the second game, leading Moscow (2-4) to a 7-1, 9-0 sweep at Post Falls (0-3). Luke Matthews was 5 for 7 on the day, including a two-run single in the second game. Chris Papineau hit a two-run homer in the opener… . Joe Spears struck out 15 in the opener and Colville (3-2) notched a 4-3, 9-5 sweep of visiting Cheney (2-2). Brett Ferguson drove in Tyler Albertson to cap Colville’s three-run fifth in the opener… . Darin McCall had four RBIs in the first game and Clarkston (6-1) took advantage of a seventh-inning error in the second game for a 14-3, 12-11 sweep at West Valley (1-2).

Mike Banks pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 12 and walking none, and Lakeland defeated visiting Kellogg 12-0 to complete an Intermountain League sweep. Kevin Reese homered and doubled to support Banks, who pitched the Hawks to their seventh consecutive win. Jason Thomas (4-0), pitched a three-hitter, and had three hits, including two doubles, to guide Lakeland’s 10-2 second-game win… . Also in the league, Trent Duffey (2-0) struck out seven in the first game and went 4 for 4 in the second game, leading St. Maries to a 12-2, 20-4 sweep of Timberlake at Spirit Lake.

Softball

Shena Charles pitched a two-hitter in the second game, and visiting St. Maries defeated Timberlake 5-2 for a split of an IML doubleheader at Spirit Lake. Timberlake won the opener 6-2, with Lisa Fox allowing one earned run and scoring the game-winner… . Also in the league, Lakeland pitchers allowed no hits during a 14-1, 12-1 sweep of Kellogg at Rathrdum. Loni Baumann and Teea Stutheit combined on the first no-hitter, with Stutheit throwing the final four innings. Freshman Stephanie Tierri pitched the second no-hitter… . Lindsay Morris went 4 for 4 as Bonners Ferry defeated Priest River 13-9 to split a doubleheader. PR won the opener 18-8, with Nikki Yount earning the decision.

Brooke Brown threw a two-hitter in the opener and had the gamewinning hit, a two-run double, in the second game of Colville’s 3-1, 5-1 sweep of visiting Cheney (1-3) in the Border League. Colville is 4-2… . Also in the league, Kristy Alberts homered in the opener to give West Valley (1-2) a 13-3 win over visiting Clarkston (3-4). Clarkston won the second game 11-4, benefitting from seven Eagles errors.
