Obituaries

Raymond Harshman Deer Park

Service for Raymond D. Harshman, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Milton Center, Ohio, Mr. Harshman died Friday.

He served as a cook in the Civilian Conservation Corps until joining the Navy in 1939. He was stationed aboard the USS Utah during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He also served in the European and Pacific theaters.

Mr. Harshman worked as a carman for the Western Fruit Express, a division of Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1983.

He was the first fire chief of the Clayton (Wash.) Fire Department.

Mr. Harshman was a member of the Carman Union, Pearl Harbor Survivors Chapter 1 in Spokane and Chapter 4 in Lake Havasu, Ariz., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3067, Eagles Lodge and the Clayton Senior Citizens.

His wife, Barbara, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Harshman Jr. of Boise; two stepsons, David Hartill of Spokane and Ed Hartill of Deer Park; two stepdaughters, Janet Cole of Chattaroy, Wash., and Darlene Holcomb of Horseshoe Lake, Wash.; three brothers, Gerald Harshman of Prescott, Ariz., Bob Harshman of Phoenix and Eldon Harshman of Houma, La.; two sisters, Mildred Dewese of Columbus, Ohio, and Doris Hamm of Woodburn, Ind.; a close friend, Betty Verdel of Clayton, Wash.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Smith Portland

Memorial service for Dorothy (Kilgore) Smith, 79, will be at 10:30 a.m. next Thursday at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Colfax, Wash. Riverview Abbey Funeral Home in Portland is in charge of arrangements Born in Spokane, Mrs. Smith died March 23.

She taught high school in LaCrosse, Wash.

Mrs. Smith had lived in Whitman County for 35 years before recently moving to Bellingham and then to Portland.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society and the Whitman County Historical Society. She also was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Her husband, Roland, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Smith Bellingham and Mary “Kathy” Blauvelt of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a sister, Doris Pickerel of Spokane; and two grand-daughters.

Dorothy Hogle Moreno Valley, Calif.

Memorial service for Dorothy Munson Hogle, 82, will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Latah (Wash.) Country Bible Church. Inurnment will precede the service at the Latah Cemetery. Acheson and Graham in Moreno Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Latah, Mrs. Hogle died March 15.

She lived in Spokane for more than 50 years before moving to Moreno Valley approximately seven years ago.

Mrs. Hogle was a homemaker, and a member of the Beacon Chapel Church in Spokane and First Family Church in Moreno Valley.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Wright of Moreno Valley and Carolyn Hatler of Phoenix; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Wilbur `Bud’ Elliott Spokane

Memorial service for Wilbur M. “Bud” Elliott, 64, will be at noon Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 20-year Spokane resident, Mr. Elliott died Tuesday. He was born in Connersville, Ind.

He worked as a pulp cooker for Scott Paper Co. in Everett. He retired in 1980.

His wife, Iola, died in 1985.

Survivors include three sons, John, Charles and Buddy Elliott, all of Spokane; three daughters, Robbin Williams and Patti Lee, both of Spokane, and Tina Elliott of Grants, N.M.; 15 brothers and sisters, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John Carlson Spokane

Service for John A. Carlson, 97, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

A 65-year Spokane resident, Mr. Carlson died Saturday. He was born in Great Falls, Mont.

He received a bachelor’s degree in 1925 and a master’s degree in 1931 from the University of Washington.

Mr. Carlson taught high school mathematics in Davenport, Wash., and Pendleton, Ore. He also was a teaching assistant at the University of Washington.

In 1935 he joined the faculty at Whitworth College. He taught mathematics, physics and engineering and served as chairman of the mathematics department. He retired in 1971.

He was a founding member of the Monroe Park Gospel Chapel as well as an elder and treasurer. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

His wife of 56 years, Judith, died in 1988.

Mr. Carlson is survived by two nieces, Jean Johnson and Caroline Gross; and three nephews, Milo, Paul and Daniel Carlson.

Wayne Janzen Spokane

Memorial service for R. Wayne Janzen, 67, will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Bakersfield, Calif., Mr. Janzen died Saturday.

His family moved to Spokane in 1939. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1950.

After serving in the Navy for two years, he returned to Spokane. Mr. Janzen and his brother, Dwight, established Janzen and Janzen Steel Fabricators. He retired in 1997 after 43 years in the steel fabricating business.

A member of First Baptist Church for 54 years, he served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher, deacon and as a mission committee member.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Beverly; a daughter, Jeanne Nokes, and two sons, Jim and John Janzen, all of Spokane; a brother, Dwight Janzen of Spokane; a sister, Patricia Evans of Seattle; and four grandchildren.

Mabel Mensinger Spokane

Graveside inurnment for Mabel L. (Munson) Mensinger, 87, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Colfax (Wash.) Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Watkins, Minn., Mrs. Mensinger died Monday.

She married Karl Lonn in 1929. He died in 1963.

She married Joseph Mensinger Sr. in 1966, and they operated Joe’s Tavern in Colfax until the late 1980s.

Mrs. Mensinger moved to Spokane last year.

Her husband died in 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Lonn of Davenport, Wash., and Kenneth Lonn of Auburn, Wash.; a daughter, Judith Hopkins of Spokane; two stepsons, Tim Mensinger of Kennewick and Ron Mensinger of Bremerton; two stepdaughters, Dolores Conrad of Kennewick and Ida Canady of Sulton, Wash.; 29 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Florence Hall Spokane

Memorial service for Florence F. (Fulton) Hall, 92, will be held at a later date in Denver. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 11-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Hall died Sunday. She was born in Denver.

She graduated from the University of Denver in 1926 and was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority.

In 1933 she married Radford Hall.

Mrs. Hall was a homemaker until her husband’s death in 1958. She then went to work in the treasurer’s office of Opportunity School in Denver. She retired in 1980.

She wrote a column for the Record Stockman magazine for 10 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Radell Mitchell of Spokane; a son, Radford Hall II of Pacifica, Calif.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Miller Colville, Wash.

Memorial gathering for Beatrice Irene (Deaver) Miller, 89, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at her home. Private graveside service will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Miller, who was born in Goff, Kan., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Corning, Kan.

In 1928 she married Harry Hern and moved to California where she worked in the shipyards. They then moved to Echo Valley near Colville in 1945 and farmed. In 1953 they moved to Colville, where she worked as a waitress and as a checker at Safeway. Her husband died in 1959.

She later married Ed Wuhrman and worked as a secretary for the Colville School District. Her husband died in 1975.

She moved to California and married Matt Miller in 1979. Her husband died in 1991.

Mrs. Miller moved back to Colville in 1991.

She was a member of Fort Colville Grange.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Hern of Republic, Wash.; a sister, Catherine Webster of Colville; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

John Parker Rathdrum, Idaho

Visitation for John Henry Parker, 68, will be held Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum.

Mr. Parker, who was born in Pensacola, Fla., died Saturday following an extended illness.

He joined the Army in 1951 and served with the 11th Airborne during the Korean War.

Mr. Parker moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1966 before settling in Rathdrum in 1971 and had worked as a groundskeeper at North Idaho College.

He was a member of the North Idaho Activ-8ers square dance group, the Masonic, and Fort Sherman Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Ruthie; two daughters, Wyline Parker of Rathdrum and Janet Rohr of Spokane; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jami Boyd Metaline Falls, Wash.

Visitation for Jami Lynn Boyd, 44, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Private memorial gathering will be held in Cusick, Wash.

Ms. Boyd died Friday.

Born in Spokane, she was a 15-year resident of Metaline Falls.

Ms. Boyd worked as a care giver in the home health care industry.

Survivors include three daughters, Heather Gardner of Ione, Wash., and Amber and Kristina Adair, both of Oldtown, Idaho; her former husband, Roy Adair of Oldtown; her stepmother, Vivian Boyd of Cusick, Wash.; her mother, Donna Greene of Spanaway, Wash.; three brothers, DeWayne, Bob and Brian Childers; three sisters, Doretta Greelis, Phyllis Douglas and Joan Hicks; and two grandchildren.

Irene Kniffin Garfield, Wash.

Graveside service for M. Irene Kniffin, 80, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Colfax (Wash.) Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kniffin, who was born in Kamloops, British Columbia, died Sunday.

She was a resident of Garfield for more than 33 years.

She married Earl Kniffin in 1958 and was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1982.

There are no surviving family members.

Esther (Hornby) Cone Moscow, Idaho

Service for Esther Ella (Hornby) Cone, 92, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Princeton (Idaho) Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Potlatch (Idaho) City Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Harvard, Idaho, Mrs. Cone died Monday.

She graduated from Klamath Falls (Ore.) High School in 1925.

She married Delmar Cone in 1926, and they lived in Princeton where they operated a dairy until 1934 and then the Princeton Store from 1934 to 1944.

Mrs. Cone and her family moved to Harvard in 1944. She was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1987.

She moved to the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow 11 years ago.

She was a member of Princeton Church of the Nazarene, Harvard Ladies Aide and Princeton Grange.

Mrs. Cone is survived by 10 grandchildren, Darla and DeMaris Whitney, both of Spokane, Doyle Whitney of Rathdrum, Idaho, Debra Lusby of Hayden, Idaho, Ellis Parkins and Kathy LeFors, both of Moscow, Ron Parkins of Viola, Idaho, Dawn Fracz of Olympia, Douglas Whitney of Belgium and Dennis Parksin of Colorado; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Eva (Johnson) Beck Spokane

Memorial service for Eva J. (Johnson) Beck, 101, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. Graveside inurnment will be on Monday at the Deer Lodge (Mont.) Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beck, who was born in Winston, Mont., died last Thursday.

She grew up in the Deer Lodge Valley area.

She married Otto Beck in 1917, and they lived in Anaconda, Mont., for 60 years. They moved to Spokane in 1986.

She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

Her husband died in 1987.

Survivors include four daughters, Maxine Van Denburg and Bonnie McMorris, both of Spokane, Marie Funston of Seattle and Doris Julius of Cupertino, Calif.; 31 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Irma Jones Spokane

Memorial service for Irma A. Jones, 81, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cooper George Retirement Center. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, who was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, died Sunday.

She was a 51-year Spokane resident and had worked as a cosmetologist.

Mrs. Jones had lived in the Cooper George Retirement Center for the past 15 months.

Her husband of 63 years, Wilburn, died in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Smith of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ronald James Spokane

Memorial service for Ronald James, 85, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

A 25-year Spokane resident, Mr. James died Monday. He was born in Dixon, Mont.

He worked as a section foreman for the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Phyllis; two daughters, Donna Demarest and Kay Delesdernier; a son, Ronald James Jr.; a sister, Hildred Overlie; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
