Helen Smith Spokane
Memorial service for Helen Elizabeth Smith, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Inurnment will at Spangle Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Spokane, Mrs. Smith died Sunday.
She graduated in 1929 from Hillyard High School.
Mrs. Smith received a teaching certificate from Holy Names Normal School in 1930. She later earned education and journalism degrees from the University of Washington.
During World War II she was a medical social worker with the American Red Cross in Alexandria, La.
She taught elementary school throughout Washington state including at Finch Elementary School from 1955 to 1957.
She was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and was active in the Camp Fire organization for 80 years.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Philip; a daughter, Christy deViveiros of Spokane; and two grandchildren.
Zeldabeth Miller Spokane
Visitation for Zeldabeth B. Miller, 89, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park.
Mrs. Miller died Sunday. She was born in Spokane.
She graduated from Washington State College in 1931 and then received a master’s degree in human nutrition from Kansas State College.
In 1934 she married Howard Bertsch. They later divorced.
Mrs. Miller and her family moved to Texas in the early 1940s. She worked as a civilian for the Army Medical Service. She later purchased a ranch which she operated from 1947 to 1952.
Mrs. Miller then moved to Alaska where she became co-owner of a general construction company. In 1956 she began working as a home economics extension agent, first in Michigan as a consumer information agent and then as the Stevens County rural resources development agent in Colville, Wash. She then became the home economics extension agent in Olympia. In 1968 she became an extension agent in Shiprock, N.M. with New Mexico State University.
Mrs. Miller received the National Distinguished Service Medal in 1971.
She returned to Spokane 22 years ago.
Her husband, Ed Miller, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Tom Bertsch of Spokane; a brother, Cecil Long of Ocean Park, Wash.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Emandaline `Manda’ Kelley Spokane
Visitation for Emandaline “Manda” Kelley, 47, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mrs. Kelley, who died Saturday, was born in Vallejo, Calif.
Her family moved to the Spokane area when she was a child. She graduated in 1971 from Medical Lake High School.
Prior to marrying John Kelley, she worked for The Crescent department store. They later divorced.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Kelley returned to Spokane in 1996.
Survivors include two sons, Jason and John Kelley Jr., both of Spokane; her former husband, John Kelley of Spokane; her parents, Manuel and Emalda Brown of Spokane; three brothers, Dwan and Timothy Brown, both of Spokane, and Manuel Brown III of Issaquah, Wash.; and a sister, Inez Chubb of Spokane.
Kathryn Pangallo Spirit Lake, Idaho
Viewing for Kathryn Florence Pangallo, 76, will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel. Mrs. Pangallo, who was born in the Granite, Idaho, area near Sandpoint, died Wednesday.
She attended schools in Granite and Sandpoint, and in 1945 married Delton Schmeling. This marriage later ended.
In 1979 she married John Pangallo.
She was active in the remodeling of older homes, was a homemaker, gardener and quilter.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Forrest Schmeling of Coeur d’Alene, Garth Schmeling of Boise and Craig Schmeling of Newport, Wash.; a daughter, Doreen Mack of Post Falls; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
John Smith, M.D. Sandpoint
Memorial service for John Wilken Smith, M.D., former Bonner General Hospital chief of staff, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Sandpoint Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith, who was born in Lincoln, Neb., died March 31. He was 82.
He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in New York and Montana during the Depression and then attended Laurelwood Academy and Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts.
Mr. Smith then moved to Southern California and worked at Schrillo Aero Tool Co., during World War II. In 1941 he married Jane Carter.
He then followed in his brothers’ footsteps and enrolled in the University of Southern California Loma Linda Medical School and transferred to La Sierra Medical School before being drafted in the Army.
After his military service he re-enrolled at Loma Linda and graduated in 1951. He completed an internship at Los Angeles County Hospital.
Mr. Smith moved to Sandpoint in 1952 and opened a medical practice, which included housecalls, and eventually became chief of staff at Bonner General Hospital, retiring after more than 40 years.
He volunteered his medical services at various community events such as rodeos, hydroplane races and Elks Lodge boxing tournaments. Mr. Smith was also involved in local real estate development at Edelweiss Village and Kaniksu Shores Estates.
He was a member and Sunday school teacher at the Sandpoint Seventh-day Adventist Church and was active in various church capacities.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack Smith of Spokane and Charles Smith of Sandpoint; a daughter, Nancy Gaunt of Sandpoint; three brothers, Dunbar and Eden Smith, both of California, and Jerry Smith of Colorado; a sister, Mary Munce of Sandpoint; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Detillion Spokane
Memorial service for Gertrude Ruth Detillion, 91, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery.
A 20-year Spokane resident, Miss Detillion died Wednesday. She was born in Hunters, Wash.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Nazarene church.
Miss Detillion is survived by a sister, Clara Lorsung, and a brother, Ross Detillion, both of Spokane.
Ruth (Heidegger) McNutt Spokane
Service for Ruth (Heidegger) McNutt, 88, will be at noon today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
Born at the Heidegger homestead near Rice, Wash., Mrs. McNutt died Saturday.
She graduated from Kettle Falls (Wash.) High School in 1930. Mrs. McNutt moved to Spokane in 1943.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Open Bible.
Her husband, Robert, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Bill McNutt of Newport, Wash; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Dorothy Smith Spokane
Memorial service for Dorothy Katherine Smith, 81, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.
A 28-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Smith died Sunday. She was born in Butte, Mont. and graduated from Montana State University.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Women of Rotary and the Southside Newcomers Bridge Club.
Her husband, Bill, died in 1987.
She is survived by three daughters, Liane Ingalls of Corvallis, Ore., Deborah Bronson of Pflugerville, Texas, and Karin Smithson of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Marie Raisio Colville, Wash.
Funeral Mass for Marie Olive Raisio, 82, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Colville. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.
A former longtime Northport, Wash., resident, Mrs. Raisio died Monday. She was born in Colville.
She graduated from Colville High School and Northwestern Business School in Spokane.
In 1939 she married Vaino Raisio.
Mrs. Raisio was a secretary for the Carney Pole Co. in Northport. She also was a clerk for the city of Northport. She retired in 1973.
She and her husband moved to Colville in 1997.
Mrs. Raisio is survived by her husband; four sons, Terry Raisio of Vashon Island, Wash., Jim Raisio of Mercer Island, Wash., Bud Raisio of North Bend, Wash., and Gary Raisio of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Linda Cole of Umatilla, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Noe of Colville and Lois Hills of Grapeview, Wash.; a brother, Leo Artman of Portland; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Eva (Cramer) Beck Spokane
Memorial service for Eva J. (Cramer) Beck, 101, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. Graveside inurnment will be Monday at the Deer Lodge (Mont.) Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Beck, who was born in Wisdom, Mont., died March 30.
She grew up in the Deer Lodge Valley, Mont., area.
In 1917 she married Otto Beck and they lived in Anaconda, Mont., for 60 years. They moved to Spokane in 1986.
She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.
Her husband died in 1987.
Survivors include four daughters, Maxine Van Denburg and Bonnie McMorris, both of Spokane, Marie Funston of Seattle and Doris Julius of Cupertino, Calif.; 31 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Rosalie (Kinzel) Hennessy Washtucna, Wash.
Graveside service for Rosalie (Kinzel) Stark Hennessy, 85, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Washtucna. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Lind, Wash., Mrs. Hennessy died Tuesday.
She married George Stark in 1935. They lived and farmed in Washtucna until his death in 1977.
In 1990 she married John Hennessy.
She was a homemaker and a member of Washtucna Community Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her husband of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Dennis Stark of Washtucna; a sister, Pauline Gooden of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Irven `Red’ Knudtson Spokane
Graveside service for Irven K. “Red” Knudtson, 85, is planned for noon Saturday at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Knudtson, who was born in Presho, S.D., died Sunday.
He was a 52-year Spokane resident and worked for the city of Spokane as an automotive repairman. He retired in 1970. He also had worked for the Great Northern Railroad repairing boxcars and for the magnesium plant on the pot lines.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dollie; four daughters, Donna Funk, Peggy Cerenzia and Carol Gerrard, all of Spokane, and Linda Dahlgren of Renton, Wash.; a son, Keith Knudtson of Issaquah, Wash.; 28 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Doris Port Spokane
Memorial service for Doris Allenfort Port, 81, will be at 2 p.m. today at her home. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in British Columbia , Mrs. Port died Saturday.
She had lived in Spokane for 60 years and worked as a waitress for Albertson’s. She also was a homemaker.
Her husband, John Allenfort, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Allenfort of Spokane and Jack Allenfort of Redmond, Wash.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
