Gilbert’S Save Lifts Shadle

Brandon Gilbert stopped a penalty kick with less than 3 minutes left on Wednesday, preserving Shadle Park’s 1-0 win over visiting Central Valley (8-3-1, 5-2) in a Greater Spokane League boys soccer upset.
Brandon Julian of the Highlanders (4-10, 3-5) scored at 70 minutes on a penalty kick. Gilbert finished with eight saves.
Elsewhere in the GSL, Kirk Jones scored with a minute left to force overtime and added a score during a 4-2 shootout that gave University (7-6, 4-4) a 2-1 win at North Central (7-5, 2-5). U-Hi’s Ryan Hite made two saves during the shootout. Titans Tyler Falco, Scott Tarbutton and Gary Kossuth also scored in the shootout… . Aaron Rux set up the first goal, by Eric Brynestad, and added a second-half goal on a penalty kick, helping Lewis and Clark (7-4-1, 6-1) take a 4-0 win over East Valley (3-9, 1-6) at Hart Field. LC improved to 16 points, moving past CV into third place.
Jason Nolte was credited with a score after a defender deflected the ball off him, and Gonzaga Prep (5-7-1, 4-3) scored twice in the second half to seal a 5-2 win at Rogers (0-11, 0-7). Prep’s Nick Ascolese and Rogers’ Josh Adams headed in goals in the first half… . David White totaled three goals to power Ferris (11-2, 6-1) to an 8-0 win at Mt. Spokane (5-6, 3-5). Ferris, with 18 points, tied idle Mead (9-2, 6-1) for first place… . Mead, Ferris and LC are all 6-1 in league. LC plays at Ferris on Monday. The regular season ends April 29, with Mead vs. Ferris at Albi Stadium.
