Hemp Contest For Kids

Actor and environmentalist Woody Harrelson has launched a statewide essay contest on the subject of industrial hemp. He wants school children to write about hemp, its history and the products that can come from it. Harrelson is offering $500 for the first place, $300 for second place and $150 for third in each of three age groups: fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade and 10th through 12th grade. Harrelson has long been a vocal advocate for the legalization of hemp, which is despite its many uses, is currently illegal in the United States. Hemp cannot be smoked like marijuana, but its fibers can be used to make clothing, paper, rope and many other utilitarian goods.
