Good Help All Around Helps Cougs End Skid
Preseason All-American Jason Grove went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs and Ray Hattenburg raised his season average to .377 with a 2-for-4 game as Washington State snapped an eight-game losing streak, defeating Arizona 12-4 in a Pac-10 conference baseball game Thursday night.
WSU senior starting pitcher Todd Meldahl picked up the win, allowing four runs and striking out six in seven innings. Sophomore Zach Fisher came on in relief and struck out three of the seven batters he faced. Between them, Meldahl and Fisher checked the Wildcats (21-24, 6-10 Pac-10) on one hit over the last five innings.
The biggest inning for the Cougars (15-25, 3-10) was a five-run fifth. Bookie Gates provided a two-run double and Jordan Nilsen added a two-run triple. The other run scored on a single by Evan Hecker.
