Lewiston Dominates Top Rival Cda
From Sports Replay, C2 (Saturday, April 22, 2000): B.J. Moffitt, who hit a grand slam Thursday against Mt. Spokane, plays for North Central. In that same game, Derek Sowers pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Mt. Spokane. He was misidentified.
Apparently a lot separates first and second place in the Border League baseball standings.
Lewiston scored 14 of its 15 runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to a 15-2 victory over visiting Coeur d’Alene Thursday in a game featuring the league’s top two teams.
Lewiston (11-0) had eight hits in those two innings, and Derek Bruce of the Bengals hit his eighth triple in 11 league games. Coeur d’Alene fell to 7-2.
In other league action, last-place Post Falls (1-6) battled back from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning en route to its first victory of the season, a 6-3 win at Colville (5-3). … Jake Lenz scored twice and had three RBIs as Lake City (4-7) defeated visiting Moscow (3-8) 13-3. LC pitcher Brian Babb gave up a three-run homer in the first and finished with four strikeouts.
In a non-league game, Josh Sears hit two home runs for five RBIs as Sandpoint (5-9) defeated visiting Bonners Ferry 16-4.
Softball
Amanda Velikanje scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth as Colville (5-3) defeated visiting Post Falls (2-4) 2-1 in a Border League game. A sacrifice bunt by Cheri Nelson moved Velikanje to third. Brooke Brown struck out 15 batters and didn’t give up a walk, and also singled to bring in the tying run in the seventh.
Also in the league, Jihan Anderson had eight strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-0 and lead Lake City (9-2) over visiting Moscow (4-7) 4-2. … Lewiston (7-3) defeated visiting Coeur d’Alene (6-4) 5-4 in a tiebreaker. The Bengals won on a fielder’s choice. Coeur d’Alene’s Devlin Dougherty hit a two-run single in the extra inning.
Track and field
Priest River edged Bonners Ferry 70-67 to sweep an Intermountain League girls meet at Timberlake.
Melissa Booth won the high jump and long jump and Tambri Cork won the shot put and discus as Priest River also defeated Timberlake 86-42.
Hailey Hayes won the two hurdles and pole vault for Priest River, which beat Timberlake 71-42.
On the boys side, Bonners Ferry beat Priest River 85-61 and Timberlake 83-60. Andy Rice, Matt Behrens and Forest Braden were double winners for Bonners Ferry.
In the Border League, Cheney won the 1,600 relay by 5 seconds to edge Clarkston 75-74 in girls track at Clarkston. Rhett Humphrey won both hurdles and the 200 as the Cheney boys beat the Bantams 79-58. … At Colville, the Indians beat West Valley 88-62 on the girls side but the WV boys defeated Colville 77-68. Sprinter Deyna Tripp, distance ace Crystal Evans and hurdler Shannon McGrane were double winners for Colville. Shannon Groh won the discus and javelin for WV. Justin Drake won the 100 and 200, plus the long jump, as Colville’s boys won all the running events except the 3,200. West Valley’s depth made the difference and Dan Ferguson won the high jump and triple jump.

Baseball
Mt. Spokane entered Thursday’s Greater Spokane League baseball game against first-place North Central with one less loss than the Indians had wins.
But that didn’t mean anything.
The last-place Wildcats hit two grand slams in their 10-run fourth inning en route to a 22-14 win at NC that handed the Indians their first loss of the season.
NC (7-1) remains in first place, with Central Valley and Ferris tied for second at 7-2.
B.J. Moffitt and Joe Kernkamp had the fourth-inning grand slams for the Wildcats (2-7) that put them ahead 12-3, and Matt Binder scored four runs and had four hits.
Central Valley moved into a second-place tie with Ferris after its 3-2 victory over the Saxons. Ferris trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh but scored two runs. With two outs, CV reliever Jay Pearson entered the game to face Saxons star Aaron Sedler and struck him out looking to earn the save. CV’s Derek Wohlers (3-1) struck out 11 and walked three. … Shadle Park had five of its six hits during a four-run fifth inning on the way to a 5-3 victory over visiting Gonzaga Prep (2-7). Ben McCracken struck out nine and walked four in a complete-game four-hitter for the Highlanders (6-3). Ben Sorcinelli scored two runs and stole three bases. … East Valley leadoff hitter Chris Fieser walked three times and was hit by a pitch, reaching all four times without an official at-bat in the Knights’ 5-3 home win over Rogers. Fieser scored two runs and Dave Marlow had a run-scoring triple in the first for EV (5-4). Rogers (3-6) pitchers gave up six walks.
Soccer
Mike Pluhta scored three goals as Pullman blanked Lakeside 5-0 in a Great Northern League soccer match at Pullman. The Greyhounds (6-2) play first-place Riverside on Saturday.
Lakeside (1-6) was outshot 31-8.
Tennis
The Gonzaga Prep girls tennis team swept doubles and the top three singles spots in a 6-1 league win over Lewis and Clark at Hart Field. The Bullpups’ toughest remaining match on their quest for a fourth straight GSL title is against Shadle Park on Tuesday. LC and Shadle tied for second behind Prep last spring.
