Mt. Spokane Shocks North Central

From Sports Replay, C2 (Saturday, April 22, 2000): B.J. Moffitt, who hit a grand slam Thursday against Mt. Spokane, plays for North Central. In that same game, Derek Sowers pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Mt. Spokane. He was misidentified.

Mt. Spokane entered Thursday’s Greater Spokane League baseball game against first-place North Central with one less loss than the Indians had wins.

But that didn’t mean anything.

The last-place Wildcats hit two grand slams in a 10-run fourth inning en route to a 22-14 upset win at NC that handed the Indians their first loss of the season.

NC (7-1) remains in first place, with Central Valley and Ferris tied for second at 7-2.

B.J. Moffitt and Joe Kernkamp hit the fourth-inning grand slams for the Wildcats (2-7) that put them ahead 12-3. Matt Binder scored four runs and had four hits.

Mt. Spokane pounded four NC pitchers for 21 hits.

In other GSL action, Central Valley moved into a second-place tie with Ferris after its 3-2 victory over the Saxons. Ferris trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh but scored two runs in the inning. With two outs, CV reliever Jay Pearson entered the game to face Saxons star Aaron Sedler, and struck him out looking to earn the save. CV’s Derek Wohlers (3-1) struck out 11 and walked three… . Shadle Park had five of its six hits during a four-run fifth inning on the way to a 5-3 victory over visiting Gonzaga Prep (2-7). Ben McCracken struck out nine and walked four in a complete-game four-hitter for the Highlanders (6-3). Ben Sorcinelli scored twice and stole three bases… . East Valley leadoff hitter Chris Fieser walked three times and was hit by a pitch, reaching all four times without an at-bat in the Knights’ 5-3 home win over Rogers. Fieser scored two runs and Dave Marlow had a run-scoring triple in the first for EV (5-4). Rogers (3-6) pitchers gave up six walks… . Dan Thigpen threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts as Mead (4-5) beat Lewis and Clark (4-5) 13-5 at Avista Stadium. Dan Stucky in the sixth and Dan Staton in the fourth each hit two-run singles for the Panthers.

In the Border League, first-place Lewiston scored 14 of its 15 runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to a 15-2 win over visiting Coeur d’Alene in a game featuring the league’s top two teams. Lewiston (11-0) had eight hits in those two innings and Derek Bruce of the Bengals hit his eighth triple in 11 league games. Coeur d’Alene fell to 7-2… . Last-place Post Falls (1-6) battled back from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning en route to its first win of the season, a 6-3 win at Colville (5-3)… . Jake Lenz scored twice and had three RBIs as Lake City (4-7) defeated visiting Moscow (3-8) 13-3.

Softball

Shadle Park junior Jessica Murray pitched her third shutout in three days as the Highlanders blanked Gonzaga Prep 7-0 at Shadle.

Murray (8-2) carried a perfect game through five innings but gave up a leadoff single in the sixth. She allowed three hits, struck out six and walked one. Her previous shutouts were one-hitters. Dorthea Gooch went 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and Annie Boyd was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run in the first for Shadle (8-2). Prep is 3-8.

Also in the league, Lewis and Clark scored nine runs in the first inning on four walks, four hits and an error en route to a 10-3 win at Mead. LC’s Kaylene Fountain pounded a bases-loaded triple in the first and struck out 12 to pick up the win for the second-place Tigers (9-2). Her cousin, Dawnice Fountain of Mead (2-8), only allowed seven baserunners after the first inning… . Carena Ebat scored one run and knocked in three as Central Valley defeated visiting Ferris (5-5) 6-3. Jennifer Schmitt scored twice for the Bears (7-3) and Amy Erickson struck out six while improving her record to 4-1… . Only three of Rogers’ runs were earned in its 6-0 road win over East Valley (3-9). Jamie Merrill had eight strikeouts and no walks and Shelly Seipp went 3 for 4 for the Pirates (5-5)… . Jodi Hultquist tripled home two runs in the first inning to break the game open and Mt. Spokane dominated North Central (0-10) 14-1. Terah Summers had a three-run triple in the third for the Wildcats (6-4).

In the Border League, Amanda Velikanje scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth as Colville (5-3) defeated visiting Post Falls (2-4) 2-1. A sacrifice bunt by Cheri Nelson moved Velikanje to third. Brooke Brown struck out 15 and didn’t give up a walk and also singled to bring in the tying run in the seventh… . Jihan Anderson had eight strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-0 and lead Lake City (9-2) over visiting Moscow (4-7) 4-2… . Lewiston (7-3) defeated visiting Coeur d’Alene (6-4) 5-4 in a tiebreaker. The Bengals won on a fielder’s choice. Coeur d’Alene’s Devlin Dougherty hit a two-run single in the extra inning.

Soccer

Mike Pluhta scored three goals as Pullman blanked Lakeside 5-0 in a Great Northern League soccer match at Pullman. The Greyhounds (6-2) play first-place Riverside on Saturday. Lakeside (1-6) was outshot 31-8. In another GNL game, Aaron Gomez scored twice in Medical Lake’s 5-1 win at Chewelah. The Cardinals (4-4) outshot the Cougars (0-8) 26-10.

Tennis

The Gonzaga Prep girls team swept doubles and the top three singles in a 6-1 league win over Lewis and Clark at Hart Field. The Bullpups’ toughest remaining match on their quest for a fourth straight GSL title is against Shadle Park on Tuesday. LC and Shadle tied for second behind Prep last spring.

Basketball

East Valley girls coach Darsi Frazier has resigned after five years.

“The program needed a change, and I needed a change,” said Frazier. “It’s time for me to enjoy things outside the school.”

Frazier is a Clarkston High and Whitworth College graduate who has coached at all levels of the game.

She spent three years assisting at Whitworth and served as a freshman and junior varsity coach before becoming EV’s head coach in 1996.

Frazier’s overall record was 47-66.

The Knights reached the Frontier League district finals three times, twice playing in regionals. Last year, their first in the Greater Spokane League, they finished 7-13.

Most of the starting lineup returns.

“Whoever takes over is in a nice situation,” said Frazier.
